OT: Norlund double bit hatchet...here you go, Dan

Now that is seriously pretty. $50 and 6 days to go. That's going to be an expensive little toy.

Toy? toy? TOY????

Isss no toy!!! Isss tooolll!!!!

Manly Man's tooolll!!!!

:) Be well and safe.

I wonder how the Ft. Megs Nessmuk by Ragnar compares too it?
Probably quite a bit lighter annit? I still want one of these though.:D

Yuh nSuh?

the difference is between a surgeon's blade (Ragnar's) and a working tool (the Norlund.)

The double-bit Fort Meig's still scares me. It is so sharp, it is like a scapel on a stick. VERY serious chopper, but demands every damned bit of attention to how you are using it, and where you are aiming.

The Norlund is really a woodman's axe, albeit with a shorter handle. I think it is much more controlable (if my single bit old Norlund's is any criterion to judge by) and less intimidating.

Hollowdweller has more experience and can give you another point of view.

The Norlund I have has a 19 inch handle which is too small for big tasks, and too big for small ones. It is heavy by comparison for carrying.

Be well and safe.

That's sure a sweety, Kis.....very nice.

The thing that makes them so special is the relative flatness of the head. The steel is good steel that won't bend or deform. Great combination.

Every time I have seen or bid on one of those Norlunds on ebay it has wound up at over 200 bucks! I have never won!

On the other hand, and the reason I had to drop out of the Foxy Folly list, was that I got an e mail last week to send in payment because my Reeves Double Bit belt hatchet I have been waiting 8 months for was ready  :D

12" handle, osage orange. Double bit. I'll let y'all know how it is. Oh yea, what Kismet said on the Ragnar axe. devastatingly sharp, stays sharp and only 14 or 15 oz!

HD?

I'm already jealous. Blue's has one which sounds similar. I'll see if I can post an image.

Next you need a 10-pound canoe!

Be careful with that Reeve's, he does "sharp."

Greetings fellow blade/edge nuts...was a bit surprised after GOOGLING for Norlund double bit hatchets to find this thread. I was the lucky winner of the Norlund that starts in the first post of this string. Hadn't a clue that they had such a following that is apparent here. I just had to have it. Some chord deep inside said to do so....I always obey. If there is anything I can share with you folks that you may want to know (but probably already do) about it once it arrives, I'd be happy to oblige. Hits me strangely sometimes ..... where I live here, there isn't a soul interested in this subject (edgeware). I run entirely alone in my pastime.....but here on the boards, that's another story.

My congratulations on your prize. I would be interested in you impresssions when it arrives. I've never held a Norlund, so I don't quite understand the mystique, except in principle.

Not like that here......in fact, you might not even be able to get in a word (edgewise).

(you can thank me for the double-pun later :D :p)

I have one of the Ft Megs Nessmuks. I made a leather sheath for it. Nice little hatchet.

Welcome Geladen,

You should drop by often, you will first become amused, then intrigued, then mildly attracted, then dabble, then serious, then (HAHAHAHAHAAHAH) addicted to khuks.

Nice axe man. Don't forgive Dan for the pun, it will only encourage him.

Be well and safe.

I would love to have a Norlund but until then Daren Cutsforth has these on sale:

Mini Hatchet 410 Price: $88.00
Always in stock!! It's small, light and perfectly balanced. It can sharpen a pencil, slice a tomato paper thin, and shave the print right off this page. It will frizz sticks for tinder, cut fine kindling and split small logs. It will fillet a fish, skin a moose, tenderize a steak, turn your pancakes, spread jam and peanut butter, pound tent stakes and chop vegetables. It will ride as lightly on your hip as the average hunting knife. Quote from Cliff Jacobson of Tactical Knives Magazine The "Mini Hatchet" weighs 11.03 oz,is 10.25 long. Comes with a leather sheath and Gransfors 20 year Guarantee. IN STOCK !! You will love it or your money back.

Welcome Geladen! That is a nice axe, I love most of the old axes. Like Dan said they are very slim in profile and really cut. I've never had a Norlund, but my family has a couple of old (50 years) Plumb double bits. There is no comparison between the modern double bits to these old guys! The new ones are klugey and seem ungainly and the edges are waaaaayyyy too thick :barf: I have another neat hatchet that was given to my dad by his granddad ~ it is a Marbles that looks just like the one that they remade a few years back. Maybe when I'm at my folks next time I will photographa the Plumb and the Marbles.

Well, it showed up yesterday on my doorstep from Washington state. It definitely has seen some use with some obvious care given to it as well. It, I'm sure, has the original haft. The previous owner had drilled a large hole near the butt for a thong I guess. This was not at all visible on the images in Ebay (surprise!). One bit seems to have been used much more in favor of the other as sharpening has taken a barely discernable amount of it's original length. It is quite slim of head and has a great balance in the hand. I removed a small amount of active surface rust to the head with fine steel wool and coated it with RIG, cleaned some pitch off the haft with mineral spirits and followed that up with a coat of boiled linseed oil. Would it be sacrelige to clean up the head with fine grit emory paper as the head is quite mottled with oxidation stains??? Now I need to get a thick leather sheath made for carry, any suggestions?. Bottom line, I LIKE IT! Would like to post some images but am not of Gold level status. Can I send one of you fellas some images to post??? Maybe this weekend I'll have time to get some sunny shots with the digi-camera.
By the way thanks for the welcome!
