Hi Everybody:)

I'm taking a trip out there in October for 12 days to build up my stock photography files. I was wondering if anyone out there knew the park well, or the surrounding areas(Yellowstone etc..).

Any tips are appreciated!!
Cheap but good restaurants-
things not to miss-
places to see wildlife that are off the tourist trail-
camera repair shops in Jackson or nearby that are reliable-
people you might know who work for the park-

Many thanks in advance for ANY help!!!!:)

I was there a long time ago. I think they had some trees there. I'm not totally sure though. They may have cut them down since. Fer sure I remember some rocks. :)

And they say the internet isn't a reliable resource!;) :D Thanks for the laugh Bruise:D:D

I lived a couple hours from there and you'd think I'd know it well- but no. I don't think you'll have any trouble getting away from tourists. The distances are huge. Everyone likes the big lake at the base. I'd go toward the peaks. Beware of weather. beware of bears. Beware of Rangers; Have your papers in order.

Everyone once in awhile someone flys a plane into the side of one of the peaks and it is too remote, too steep to retrieve. I believe some are still up there.

IN Jackson Hole you can eat at Bubba's ribs, if it hasn't sunk into a blackhole the way the one did in Idaho falls it should be pretty good. Otherwise, per personal taste, I'd avoid Jackson Hole. Too many people, too many knick knacks, and not enough paddy whacks.

30 years ago the hippies invaded Jackson and got the locals in a huff. Today the hippies are in a huff because Jackson is no longer the little town it was. "it's commercial" Lot's of people got rich selling out, but lots got screwed who can't afford to stay.

Whenever a new big bore comes on the market- like the Casul, or the Marlin Guide gun, they sell well in the Jackson area at first because yuppies seek knowledgable data about 'Bear medicine". You'll see them for sale a year later after the owners fire them a couple times. Probably true of Kalispell MT, too.

Hey Rob, don't know much of anything about that area, sorry. But if you will be driving threw Utah Along I70 or Highway 89, why don't you stop by (Am just north of the I70 U89 junction). I could wip something up in the dutch oven and we could talk Khukuris.:)

Thanks for website Kis:)

The bears I understand and will prepare for, but the rangers? What papers?

Thanks very much for the offer Heber:) I will be flying into Idaho Falls, Idaho. Then driving to Jackson. So, I won't be out Utah way unfortunately. I'm expecting to be extremely busy everyday as this is a business trip, but if anyone is coming into the town of Jackson let me know!

30-year-old grand tetons, hmmm

Yep, I reckon I'd snap a few photos of those too:D

Anyone else have any more tips? Thanks!!:)

Well Rob, hope you have a great time.:)

You and anyone else from the Cantina are welcome welcome around my fire any time.

Weather and bears don't bother me we have both here. But what's this about Rangers?

nothing yall don't know by now. In big ticket places like Yosemite and Yellowstone, and Grand Teton, etc, an enhanced amount of attention is making sure those signed up for a campground or trail are actually there and not somewhere they have no paper for. This is to moderate the 'impact' of humanity upon these treasures. There are rules about off trail travel and camping, and you should be familiar with these.

Plan on having the right paper for where you are at all times. You may not be able to visit some of the places you want- there are waiting lists for campsites and wilderness trails.

We've all heard the story of the little girl who was almost thrown out of Yosemite because she picked a flower.
No, I don't think you will have any trouble. In October?
I have no idea whether you'll be allowed a khukuri in some places. No guns; big knives? Probably still OK. After all, they insist you have a 'trowel' or suitable instrument for burying feces...

IN IDAHO FALLS FIND REED'S DAIRY AND EAT SOME ICE CREAM!! BEST i'VE FOUND IN MANY STATES!!!!

Well, I don't know what a "boo boo" is but I'm sure I've been called worse...:D

I don't know if I will have time to do anything in Idaho Falls--I'm flying in to there only because Delta likes to screw its skymiles members by not letting them fly when and where they need to. So, I have to fly into Idaho Falls, drive all the way to Jackson,WY then repeat that on the way out.

BTW, when I complained to the "lady" at Delta about the inconvenience, she sighed then in a tone that suggested I must be about as smart as a dead mackeral, said "WELL, we can't fill up a plane with skymiles members! We need some PAYING customers to pay for the gas!" So I told her that my mom and dad had flown to and from Hawaii many times--first class--to EARN those miles, and the ridiculas prices you charged them for first class MORE THAN cover my meager coach seats.

Dontcha just love it when they "Reward" you with airmiles?!?! :grumpy:

Rob, I can't visualize where else there is to fly into...The Tetons must be driven to wherever you land. Butte? Jackson has a very small landing strip.

I know the look from the clerks well. I too, am a sky miles loser. The miracle program that has brought me grief. In general, Airline staff, especially since the WTC, are snootier than ever. I do not fly unless I absolutely cannot help it. I despise being with a baby, wife, and two small toddlers but searched as if I were a terrorist. A middleastern gal was searched twice at each stop, being told, "just random from the computer" ...and to think I used to carry Mauser barrels on ...course, they assigned an agent to tail my Wife, baby, and Mauser barrels every step along the way. Oh, i't true alright, I asked the employee...this was well before 9-11 I wouldn't mind so much if the measures really thwarted terrorism, ( they dont') or that I didn't have to pay for it both in taxes and ticket prices. ( we do) And now the feds have wiggled their way in we can expect lots of new fees.

Reed's dairy is just west of the freeway ramps to Idaho falls. You can swing in and have a cone on your way out of town. You gotta take yellowstone highway out to Swan Valley anyway.
