A while back I saw an Opposum cross the street in front of me on the way home. And I thought to myself "This is a Sign". The other day I was talking to a buddy and asked him "Is it strange that I see a 'possum or a duck and think 'This must be a Sign', or is it stranger that other people see a 'possum or a duck and DON'T see a sign?" When I see a bee on my car I stop to ask myself "What does the bee represent? What are its qualities? What is the Great Spirit trying to show me?" Am I the only one to look for Life's lessons in the flight of a hummingbird or a moth? And what does this have to do with khukuris?

Frank

It (the observations being 'life's lessons') kinda is if you want it to be, Frank.

Although circular, as you give value to something, so it has value to you.

Firkin's posting of Sorkan's article relates to this.

Hope all is well with you, wife, kitten/cats, and life.

Everything!

This comes from the ancient practice of observance of nature. You can watch the behavior of some animals to tell practical info, like when a storm is coming or how close land is.

Historically, the ancient Greeks, Romans, and Etruscans looked to animals and nature herself for divinatory clues. The Etruscans would actually look at the animal's entrails, and had a written system of divining from these pieces. the Romans would wach to see in which quadrant of the Forum lightning would strike to determine portents.

I also look to nature for divinatory clues. I feel that you can tell when you are being 'shown' and animal sign, and just seeing an animal. Here's how--if you feel drawn to look at an animal, or you are already looking in the space where the animal appears, then its a sign As for reading the signs, this takes practice, and study of many animal representations (for my divinitory animal signs, I use a blend of nDn animal lore, blended with that of the animal representations for my own spiritual path). Other things influence the sign, like speed or direction of movement, determination (ie determined or wandering) of the animal, number, gender, location, and color of the animal. Also, look for some cosmetic strangeness or markings on the animal, it may be a clue.

I thinnk domestic animals can also give signs, but we are often too close to pets to d-termine it sometimes. Livestock are also good divinatory tools.

I've seen no less than three animal signs in the last 5 days, and they seem to come in threes. One sign was meant for another (and received:D), but I was privy to the event as well.

It is as foolish to think that animals' presence "means" something as it is to think that it does not.

I had a fist pass in front of my nose one night and took it as a sign that it was a good time to leave that bar. ;)

On the other wing, all the birds took off one day at Scout summer camp in California and kept flying around and calling. We had a 5.9 earthquake in a few minutes. (No big damage but pretty exciting.) Obviously, they knew something we could not detect with our merely human senses. If we'd known enough to observe, the other critters were probably also behaving in unusual ways before the quake hit.

the only signs i 've seen accurately read are human... like "that guy there, in the new nike shoe's and the clean new leather jacket? ya, the one stuffing brillo pads into his pocket while the clerk isnt looking? thats a crack addict. they use the brillo pads in production. and they cant affford them once they get deep into it, the transformation is fast enough that you'll see guys in 600$ clothing like that, living on the street."

it is sad to only look at the things around you when you think you may be in danger, or to only look for the things that can hurt you... because there is so much more in life then that.

if anything, what you stated has to do with constant awareness, and that has EVERYTHING to do with kuhks - because if your not constantly aware, you can end up with a bone deep cut out of nowhere (ala my 12"ak biting into my inner nuckls with a *THUNK* out of the blue).

always keep an active mind, without boundaries (i dont like saying open mind anymore, thanks to sharpphil :) ) - it is the empty space in the center of the wheel that makes it so useful.

SFK, Ferrous-

If you know of any 'standard' (rather than personal) signs or lore pertaining to animal observence, I would love to hear it. I am collecting such data for a website I plan to create. Specifically, it will deal with animal/weather lore, but any periferal or cultural/historical background information would be very useful. (Especially since man has always taken the weather rather personally.)
Thanks. :)

Edit: Folklore on the "Owl":
Owls have a frightening mystique in culture and folklore, often being associated with death. Seeing an owl in unusual circumstances is often thought to be an omen that someone the observer knows is going to die. If an owl remained around the home site of some aboriginal tribes of Australia, it meant there would be a death in the family. To the ancient Apache Indians of the United States, even a significant dream of an owl was a sign of impending death. The superstition of many Indian tribes forbid-ding whistling at night may stem from a similar belief to that of the Cree, who believed that whistles from the Boreal owl were summons from spirits.

The Kwakiutl of the northwestern U.S. believed owls were the souls of human beings, the Mojave of the southwest believed the birds to be a step towards final realization in human reincarnation. Echoed in other tribes of Australia, the owl was thought to be the soul of a woman, someone's mother or sister.

However, not all cultures beliefs are so grim. The Dakota Hidatsa and Tlingit Indians believed the owl to be a protective spirit. Hooting-like owls when charging forward into combat, the Tlingit both spurned them-selves on and sounded fear into the opposing side. And in the dreams of the Lene Lenape Indians of modern New Jersey, the appearance of an owl meant its animal spirit would be a totemic guardian, of great benefit to that person's life.

Thanks Kismet! Awesome links! Way too awesome for me to spend much time on in my current sleepy state. :D I'll be going back tomorrow, though. :)

re: taking the weather personally...

I must admit that I did think that we were particularly blessed with such a nice weekend at the MWKK....especially after expecting rain! Almost like Fairborn knew we were coming to kick up some dust.....and welcomed us!

"That was NOT a crow" - Don Juan (Castaneda's)

AMEN! Check out Carlos' ---"Journey to Ixtlan" ---A fantastic read on signs, omens, and gestures from the Spirit.

I had the good fortune to spend a couple of weeks with Castaneda and his group of tensegrity instructors in 1995 in Culver City,California and to listen to hours of his tales about Don Juan. What an experience.

You'll never look at at nature and it's signals the same way again.

Revelations 8:10 - 8:11

And the third angel sounded, and there fell a
great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon
the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters;

And the name of the star is called Wormwood:
and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men
died of the waters, because they were made bitter.

Chernobyl is Russian for wormwood. Pretty good, eh?

As I aged these incidents faded. Most animals moving around are animals moving around. Every once in awhile I take a 'message'. It is very rare when I take one seriously, but it does happen.

The question; "What can be learned here, what is shown?" is habitual and nearly unconcious.

My Christian friends do quite a lot of, 'happened for a reason' imagining.

Bill believes his death day is written.

Think about this- nearly all of the mainstream religions do this, in one way or another. Why? Because if God is real, then He is at the End Of Time, as He is at the Beginning. He is Time. Anyway- that would make everything written, everything becoming, the body of Time.

When I was in high school, I went tracking deer with dad B4 hunting season, just to see where the deer were in Marion county. We followed parallel tracks, and they diverged. We each took a set and follwed. Mine ended, the deer having jumped up and away to a place I couldn't detect. Right at the last deep hoofprints, I saw what made the deer jump, it almost made me jump--a wonderful stone axe head half buried in the muddy furrows of the field. The track just ended there, right at the Thunderstone.

Lots variables of course had to align themselves for me to find it.
