Hey guys, I should ask this somewhere else, but i'm best acquainted with the HI forum, and one of the knivies I am mentioning has been mentioned here before in one form and I believe we have some Filipino martial artists/knife experts here.

I'm looking for a secondary knife in addition to whatever HI I take with me on outdoors/camping trips...maybe a lighter camping knife or fixed blade, anything much lighter and smaller.

1. A Barong. Mostly the ones of KC, because I am a KC fan. Question, is the Barong only appropriate for use as a weapon, or can it be weapon and tool?

2. Are you guys familiar with the James Williams (CEO Bugei) Hissatsu? Any comments? Its basically a tanto for fighting with a black traditional aikuchi handle and a short 6 inch blade with a huge o-kissaki, and a modern tactical sheath.

3. What do you guys think of SOG knives? The desert dagger kinda caught my eye...

4. Or any other suggestions for what Uncle might have that might be what I am looking for?

Are you looking for a camp knife, or a secondary weapon? I first assumed the formerbut based on the knives you list it sounds more like you want a weapon.
As I understand it the Hisatsu is currently only available from CRKt and is advertised as a pure fighter designed to fulfill a specific CQB role.

I have owned a few SOG knives and found them to be pretty good quality wise, again as a weapon the desert dagger is probably decent but I wouldn't think it would make much of an outdoor utility knife. I own the pentagon and consider it primarily a weapon with some use as an emergency blade.

I know nothing about Barongs so I will leave them for others to comment on.

here are a couple of blades that you might consider if you are looking for an outdoor utility knife to serve along side your kukri,
1. SOG seal pup
2. Buck Vangaurd, I thought someone mentioned this was avaialbe in s30v?
3. Cold Steel master hunter or SRK
4. Bark River, lots of good press and reviews and a bunch of styles fitting various outdoor roles
5. A large quality folder, spydy, sog, benchmade, CRK, many others
6. Falkniven, again lots of choices for outdoor use

Bark River Knife and Tool makes some pretty nice 3-4.5" knives at great prices for the quality - and Uncle Bill-like policy on making the customer happy.

If you're looking for a light 5"ish bladed fixed blade for general camp cutting, then you might look into the biltons that HI sells. I have one an i LOVE it. great for food prep and you can wear it on the trails without sheeple giving you the evil eye for bringing a "sword" with you. If by "lighter" you're talking about something that weighs less than an 18" WWII or AK, then maybe you might look at the Pen Knife. About 12" long total with plenty of belly to chop, dig, and cut up dinner. As a matter of fact, on my last camping trip i took along a bilton, a pen knife, and an 18" WWII. Worked out great. Bilton for packing on the heavily traveled foot paths. Pen knife for kitchen work/marshmello sticks. WWII for splitting logs and fighting off pirates and nomadic raiders. If you're looking for something more "traditional American" in a camp knife, you might check out Swamp Rat.

I second the Swamp Rat choice. I carry my Black Howler( Howling Rat) to work everyday as well as in mountians in conjuntion with my BAS. I think its one the best investments I've ever made.

Perfect go-along with your main Khukri...

At www.ragweedforge.com, called a Puukko and Leuku Combination. Saw them at Yvsa's place...awesome blades and a great combo sheath!

Gonna get a set for myself as soon as the specials here slow back down to normal. :D

With an admitted bias, Bill M. has some SARGE knives coming in one day. Search for SARGE.

That being said, if you want and need it now, and want top quality, but a somewhat soul-less response, just get a Mora 2000. They are great knives, just ... dunno. They fit well, are light, strong and keep their edge unbelievably.

They just are unable to "speak" to you.

Hi guys,

thanks for the replies. I forgot to mention that I am not a fan at all of folders...hehe, I prefer fixed blades...I trust them more somehow. I didn't even realized, you guys are right, I unconsciously want a knife suited for fighting...hehe.

Still doing my research...although I am pretty sure my choices will either be the Hissatsu or SOG DD...but that can all change if something better and prettier catches my eye...or theres a UBBB that I just can't resist.

Hey christcl,

I own a CRKT Hissatsu. It is a decent knife... but I definitely would not consider it a camping knife. As edgetrip stated, it is purely a fighter and would seem to be of limited use in any other role.

That being said, I have an old retired k-bar that I carry with my camping stuff. Probably not everyone's idea of the ideal camp knife, but it has always worked for me.

If you have your HI Khukri while you are camping, you already have one of the world's deadliest fighting knives...

I'll admit...you can't likely get an opponent to take a few superficial cuts and back down with a Khukri...but if it's serious enough to be fighting, why would you want to simply back them down anyway?

I agree with the posts here, christcl...

If you want a bit of length on the blade, a JKM would be a great choice; it's kind of like a pukka, and VERY well made. Look for it on the H.I. website, Get a GS, WWII or all round' khukuri, and you have a great weapon. If you want a purely self defence knife, the H.I.'s kerambit is a great choice. You would definitely not be letting go of it very easily in an emergency situation.

I agree 100% with DIJ and DrDan on the HI kerambit. While i know that i could use mine in the yard or to open boxes or whittle little homes for all the woodland creatures, i know that this beautiful piece of steel is pretty much a raptor's claw with a ring on it. While it is a happy and amuzing thought to picture a 6' raptor in floppy wide-brimmed gardener's hat using his/her claw to dig a hole and plant tulip bulbs, it just didn't happen (at least i think it didnt). They were used to open up critters and get to the "good stuff" inside. Good enough for big deadly lizards. Good enough for me.

Pen Knife....

10" BDC....

I'm really wanting to take the kerambit out on a camping trip sometime soon. Just haven't had the opportunity....but I think it would do well (ie. multifunction)
