Just in case you were wondering.....

F :footinmou :footinmou T - In - My - Mouth

And if DIJ would be so kind as to pronounce my screen name.
I have taken japanese classes, and I have learned that while direct romaji is ok for writing, they speak similar to us and don't always fully pronounce words.

of course, I thought it might have been "drunkard"
which is

yo-par-eye

Yo Danny,

I have heard that Koi, the Japanese Carp were orginally called "Nisha Goi," meaning something like "Swimming Jewels." But we Americans have mispronounced "Goi" as "Koi" which DOES mean something in Japanese. Before I go into what I think "KOI" means in Japanese, I'd like you to tell us so that I don't go spreading what very well could be an "Urban Myth."

Thanks
Bill

there are some sounds in japanese that change when you put a vowel in front.

k changes to g
h changes to p or b
t changes to d

nisha plus koi equals nishagoi

ichi plus hikki equals ippiki

no plus tachi equals nodachi

it doesnt change the meaning, its just to make it easier to say. burn less calories using your mouth and whatnot...

I aint kidding!

As an enlgish teacher, I spend a lot of time making them open their jaws and actually do some work speaking. Many japanese speak without moving their jaws. just tongue !

Not in New England it's not. We don't pronounce R's (especially as a last letter) ... unless the word doesn't have any to begin with and also ends on a vowel (those mountains, those would be the Himalayers, right?).

-- Russ, who lives in Worcester, MA, pronounced wiss'-tah, a city whose name is consistently misspelled by the rest of the world with an H in the middle. My last name is Kay, rhymes with weigh, and it is mostly misspelled by people who think it should have an E at the end.

"Nasty" pronounced "Don't want to p--- him off"

:D

Oh ya, real name would be Hawes pronounced haaz, not hos, not hays, not hews. Very few telemarketers actually know how to pronounce this not uncommon name. And yes it does come from the german Haas, but the american pronunciation is done the american way. One sylable, "s" sounds more like a "z". Actually it is a little difficult to explain how to pronounce my name.

Yvsa = Yuh(n)suh the (n) is just a slight nasal sound barely heard.

Gigagei = G'eee gah gay eee the G'eee being like "key" only with a hard g.
The "i" at the end is optional and depends on the dialect or slang used.
Yvsa is slang. Buffalo is spelled Yanasa or Yani(s)se again depending on the dialect. Yvsa is much easier. :D ;)

Yvsa Gigagei = Buffalo red = Red Buffalo.

And here I've been saying Eev-suh. Man do I feel stupid!

Namaarie is pronounced Namaarie.....

....just kidding. :) It's really frequently mispronounced.

Nah-mah-ree-eh. 4 syllables. Not nam-uh-ree. That's what I hear a lot and it's wrong. ends with "ay" sound. Flipped "r". It's tolkien elvish.

Nam
