Well, I didn't win, but I did get third, and finished in 42:07. I'm happy with it considering my extended absence from training, plus the winner only came in at 41:17. It was a good race, conditions were pretty good too. Cool for Georgia, and the humidity was even tolerable. There was a light shower starting after I finished, which was actually nice. I wish I had a few pictures to show, and hopefully I'll be able to link to some later, but for now I'm SOL. You see, the guy I asked to take pictures for me didn't quite get the hang of my digicam before the race started. I saw him six or seven times on the course snapping photos, but only one of them actually showed up on the memory card. The brigade photographer should have a few shots posted by tomorrow though, so I'll post a link once I know where they are at. Thank you all for the kind words and encouragement in my other thread. This is a very special forum, with lots of really great personalities.

Third in your category or thrid overall? Either way it's pretty good. For me to get third in a 10k I'd have to resort to some skullduggery. :D

About 50 runners I'd say. I never saw an official roster for the event, but it looked to be around 50. It was actually a very good field for a bunch of ameteurs, a significant portion of the field finished in under 50 minutes. They weren't all gung ho young guys either, fourth place was a Sergeant Major! He finished only 2 minutes behind me, and he's probably at least 20 years older than me too. I hope I can run so well at that age.

Couple of months of training and you can smash that 41:17 time, if you care to. Either that, or you could have the same time, but carry a heavier khuk.

Congratulations on your placement. 10K races are fun.

Congratulations, like Bruise the only way I could could ever place in a 10k race is everyone else had broken legs.:D

Even then it might be pretty close.

Thanks for the encouragement again everyone. Aardvark, I think you're right. Actually, this was only my second 10K race ever, although I've probably run over 100 5Ks throughout my high school cross country career. Doubling the distance takes a little getting used to though . I know we did a couple of 6 mile training runs under 40 minutes back then (which was only 3 years ago), so I've got the ability, I just need the practice. The forum went down before I could post this before, but I strained my calf muscle in that race, yesterday was the first day I could walk normally again. It wasn't bad, just really tight. I consider it a sign that I ran hard enough . I've got to start really racking up the miles now; I'm doing the Army 10 miler in October, it should be a lot of fun. Anyone want to have a khonvention in Washington D.C.?

Bruise and Federico, you guys crack me up. I think you're just being modest, you could probably wipe the floor with me :D .

I have so many aches and pains now that I have a hard time running very far now. If I can get my left hip healed up I will still run a bit each day.

Good to hear that you did so well. Third of fifty isn't bad at all. Hope you do that well in all your races.:) :)

What that's a sign of, is not having trained enough. That's how I messed up my knee. Ramp up a little slower. Runner's World magazine has a lot of good tips on training.

Thanks for the warning Aardvark. I've been easing back into it for the last 4 months or so, but I'm definitely far from where I want to be. My last posting was at a very small camp in S. Korea (60 acres), so it was tough to put in many miles, beyond what we did for PT. I missed a month of training this spring from injury too, I inflamed a tendon above my knee on a ruck march. We were going down a hill and the ground gave out under my left foot, leaving me balanced on my right with a 35 lb ruck pulling me over backwards. It wasn't serious, but I couldn't run for a month afterwards. About the calf, it's fine now, and I'm integrating some hill runs and weight training to keep it from happening again. I actually have a subscription to Runners World, it's a great mag. I loved the real-life stories in the latest issue, they were LOL funny. I appreciate the concern though, I definitely don't want to end up crippled like some of the older airborne guys I see. 100 jumps and now they're 2 inches shorter with bad knees and backs; not for me. I'm too short as it is! ;)

Didn't mean to be preachy, BTW.

Another REAL good way to build up leg muscles is spinning (indoor cycling classes). I do that, now that I'm old, and don't have much time.

No offense taken; I need to be set when I'm wrong. That happens pretty often, but I can admit it. Sometimes I even learn from it ;) .

Congratulations. I'm happy if I can run 10 yds. though used to do that with guys hanging off my back. ;)

I was there (Essayons) Sep 01-Sep 02. After 9/11, we had to pull roving perimiter guard. In flak vest, full LBE/Battle rattle, M16 w/ 80 rds of ammo, and a manpack radio, walking around inside those walls (plus the AHA) got old in a hurry. 12 laps in a 24-hour period was a pretty decent workout!

Essayons trivia: There are exactly 547 concrete stairsteps around the camp perimiter, mostly 'round back where the gulches are.

We usually ran off post, down by the river. The stench was amazing in the summertime.

Anyway, good job on the race. Take care of that injury!
