OT Rant: What a PITA

The previous owner of my RC-4 apparently tried to file down the serrations. It wasn't obvious until I got it in hand, and I thought I could deal with it, but it's starting to bug me now. So, now I get to restore them. Awesome, huh? Guess the price was worth a little extra work though. And I wouldn't mind a Rat Recurve.

Anybody have any good horror stories about knives they got second-hand from unenlightened users?

Edit: Pics.

Maybe it's not that bad. I just hate cleaning up after stupid people.

I don't like serrations. I'd file them off myself. Maybe you could convert it in to a recurve?

This thread is in desperate need of pics.

Just sayin'...

Yeah, sorry about the lack of RAT porn. :p

I did see where someone on here turned his into a recurve. Turned out pretty nice. I just hate the thought of abusing my RAT.

FWIW, someone at my unit suggested filing them down all the way too. As well as adding a Tanto tip. *sigh*

I guess I'm just trying to decide if it's worth the work of filing them down, and the mental anguish of abusing my Rat. I honestly don't like serrations that much myself.

Or just resharpening them.

Wow. Well, I'm sure no expert on this kind of stuff (the most high-tech grinding tool I own is a dremel), but would resharpening them even work? They look so blunted in the pics, like enough metal's missing, that I'm thinking you'd either have to widen them out (which would leave you with pretty serious performance issues) or grind them back to RAT shape, only deeper into the belly of the blade.

Which would leave you with a RAT that's both recurve AND serrated.

And if you're not a big fan of serrations.....

I think if it was me, I'd wait for a weekend. Then I'd drink. A lot. In the morning, with a hangover suitable to the task ahead of me, I'd just grind that puppy into a recurve and ditch the serrations entirely.

But then, I'm not too big into serrations, either. :)

I feel your pain, brother. Sorry that purchase went down that way.

Giggity. That's exactly what I was referring to earlier.

Hmm....looks like I've got a custom rat in the works. :P

Update:

Pretty much done. HT is intact, it doesn't look like crap, and most importantly it's sharp again.

looks good. I'm just wondering why the previous owner just messed it up and than sold it... I mean why don't just take away all the serrations like you did instead of leaving it half done as it was? seems crazy to me...

very nice clean up job on that. Almost tempts me to go out and look for some mangled blades.

Well, duh. Why didn't you get the original owner to send a photo of the knife before you bought it?

I feel your pain bro, I have bought knives sight unseen before too, and regretted it almost every time..... :/

I hate it when someone takes a good tool, and trashes it by being stupid. Talk to one of the knifemarkers here on BFs I am sure that someone can help you out.

Like the look of the re-profiling
