Here's an interesting bit that my son found on netscape:
Science: Bible's Red Sea Miracle Is Real?

This is what the book of Exodus says about the parting of the Red Sea:

"And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the Lord caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that night, and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided. And the children of Israel went into the midst of the sea upon dry ground: the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left."

Two mathematicians--one from St. Petersburg, Russia and the other from Hamburg, Germany--have concluded that the biblical story of Moses parting the rushing waters of the Red Sea so 600,000 Jews could escape slavery by the Egyptians was possible scientifically and in concurrence with the laws of physics.

Russia's St. Petersburg Times reports that by using a system of differential equations, Naum Volzinger, a senior researcher at St. Petersburg's Institute of Oceanology, and his Hamburg-based colleague Alexei Androsov established the conditions under which the waves might have parted.

Here's the mathematics and science behind the miracle: There is a reef in the Red Sea exactly at the documented spot where the Jews escaped Egypt. In ancient times, the reef was unbroken and much closer to the surface of the sea than it is today. The Bible story cites the "strong east wind that blew all that night." So mathematically, the two scientists wrote an equation that considered wind speed, the strength of the storm that would leave the reef high and dry at low tide, how long before the waters returned, and how quickly they returned.

Volzinger, who specializes in ocean phenomena, flooding, and tidal waves, calculated that the wind had to have blown at a sustained speed of 67 miles per hour to make the reef. Once the reef formed, he told the St. Petersburg Times, "It would take the Jews--there were 600,000 of them--four hours to cross the 4.2-mile reef that runs from one coast to another. Then, in half an hour, the waters would come back." The story says that when the Egyptian army followed them into the Red Sea, they drowned. "I am convinced that God rules the Earth through the laws of physics," he said.

The study, which took almost six months to complete is titled "Modeling of the Hydrodynamic Situation During the Exodus" and has been published in the Bulletin of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Mark Grubarg, the head of the Jewish community in St. Petersburg, said the spiritual value of this miracle is immense for Jews.

I'm glad it is of immense value for the Jews. I mean absolutely no disrespect now when I make this observation: The birth, death, and resurection of Christ is considered by most Jews to be a, 'fairy tale.' A nice fairy tale, a beautiful fairy tale, but a tale none the less.

I just find it mystifying why one miracle gets the nod and another is a tale.

Probably because one, the Parting of the Red Sea for example, can be explained withing the realm of posibility according to natural laws of physics while the other one can exist only within the realm of mythology and/or faith.

In 1628 BC the largest volcano in human history erupted, destroying the island of Thera and blackening the skies of the entire globe for several months.

Most Archaeologists and Historians agree that this event was the cause of many biblical "miracles" and strange stories from around the globe dating to that time.
The rain of fire, skies turning black, river turning red, crops die, children die, water level of the meditteranean (including the nile river) rising and falling by several meters, crops dying, and dont forget about the island of Thera itself.
Thera was the most advanced civilization on Earth at the time.
At the crossroads of the world, they had indoor hot and cold running water, glass windows, telescopes, etc...

Scientists have estimated that had the earthquake not have occurred, we would have landed on the moon around the time of the battle of hastings. (1066 AD)
It is agreed that this is the "atlantis" referred to by contemporary historians.

What does all that mean?
I have no idea.
Submitted for your enter-cation.

Beenaround

I don't find that persuasive, beenaround. For one thing, the Parting of the Red Sea is not confirmed 'natural explanation" But the most important, is the Old Testament (and other Jewish Texts) are filled with the Fantastic. Tablets, Burning bush,on and on.

Faith in a religion is just that- faith. I doubt even the Jews would argue their Faith is more reasoned by science.

There was a special a while back on the Great Flood story that is prevalent in so many cultures in various, but fairly similar forms. Apparently the sea burst through and flooded this one area, which was the world at that point as far as mankind was concerned.

It is amazing to me how these great events early in the history of humanity were carried all over by the people as they spread out across the world. I mean think of how long ago! Really neat.

I saw a Great Flood special on either Discovery, learning, or History channel. Trouble with the flood was it did not reach all the places it should have to get the universal nod. There are similar problems with most Biblic events.

I don't worry too much about this. I believe God would use natural physics to accomplish tasks in a real world. I don't sweat who did what when and how.

This makes me blasphemus I know.

It was very likely the fertile valley of Mesopotamia, between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers that flooded heavily, and caused the Flood legends. That area is in Iraq now, I think?
