I'm reinstalling windows... I'll probably be back in about month.

I shoulda been a farmer. :)

Don't bother...

Buy a half-price khuk and use it instead.

The HI Borg laughs at your feeble whining about non-cybernetic computer systems. Try getting an upgrade on your internal systems someday. The sub-collective known as the Borg HMO does not exhibit proper cooperation at times. Probability indicates any problems arise from the difficulty of integrating blood-sucking leeches into the collective.

But WHY?  :p

With Win-doh,s ME ..........you can just hit System Restore, and Viola!!!!:( :p ;)

Windows sux, don't it ?! Of course, I've cursed various flavors of Linux just as hard (and I'm a Unix Admin for a living) :barf: I've almost decided to bite the bullet on my next home system purchase and get a Macintosh...

Man, I do enough messing around with OSes at work. At home I just want something that won't get in the way of actually doing something useful with a computer ;)

Is this in preparation for your being "in charge" while Uncle Bill is away?

More likely he's preparing to turn his computer chair into a makeshift version of "Old Sparky" by sticking a screwdriver...

:D :D :D

Had a coder buddy who made the switch recently, he was impressed and b4 used to say the old adage "you can't compute with fruit."

He's Dave Haxton, and he was actually featured in one of their commercials.

I run Windows ME at home. Don't install it! It routinely locks up, especially Internet Explorer. I suggest Windows 2000. We use it at work and it is bullet proof. Never a problem.

I haven't switched at home yet because I don't want to experience the conversion pain that you are about to. :(

I feel sorry for anyone that has Windows ME installed. I feel even sorrier for someone who actually PAID for it.

We've had Windows XP at home for about 6 months, and have been pretty pleased with it. No lockups that I remember. Had Win98 before that, so ANYTHING would seem better.

ME/XP has it's place. If you are a gamer, you really need 98/ME/XP. The native support for direct X sucks in Win2000. (ie - doesn't exist, it's a port from the win98 codebase)

Win2000 is a more stable OS, but it can still be confusing for people who don't understand computers all that well.

There is a time and place for both products.

Good point. Let's get back on-topic: I tried to sharpen my monitor the other day and...

The codebase for DirectX? That only applies if you are using WineX or something similar. It will work with 2000. Anything running with Linux is basically a do-it-yoself job anyhow.

Anyway, ME does have its place. It's in the trashcan. LOL

If you get XP don't bother with the Home version - get the Pro. Worth every penny.

Wonder when the next version will come out. Any speculators out there?

Yup, exactly my point Dakmar. The code for DirectX was written for Win9x API's. It is ported code for Win2000, not native. This translates as a degradation in performance.

Windows ME came as standard on my HP. I haven't had any trouble with it.
I downloaded Netscape and Opera and still prefer Internet Explorer.
It's locked up on me a few times, but is generally my own fault.
But then I don't know any different so who am I to say?;)

And then I would probably been as well off with another WebTV with what I do but I really like the almost unlimited storage space I have on my real 'pooter.':)
And it's a lot faster as well.

Opera and Netscape may be better now since I've learned a little bit more about what I can do with the unit. I'm still gawd awful computer illiterate!!!!

From what I hear, MacOS 10 is Unix-based. Chances are that you won't have to mess with it the same way as most UNIX-based systems go though. I administrated SGI IRIX machines at work until a year or two ago. Sometimes it was a pain, sometimes fun. Our current windows 2000 machines blow the doors off that old Sillycon Graphics stuff. I won't look back.

I have messed with Windows 3.1, 95, 95 OSR2, 98, and 2000. Windows 2000 is far more stable than all of the OS's that I have used before, including IRIX. In fact it's more stable than all of 3.1 to 98 put together. 2 years with it now and I see no reason to switch. I dunno about ME but I have heard nightmares. XP is s'posed to be rock-solid now too.
