Just on the news. Apparently Mr. Carson died of emphysema.

Dunno how this will affect others in the Cantina, especially the younger members, but for 30 years, Carson set a standard of courtesy, charm, and good-natured humor on a nightly basis. Talk shows since his departure are characterized by sarcasm and ridicule, not humor. I doubt that any one else will ever have the impact on society in the way that he did.

I admired him greatly, and he was more a part of my life than many people I knew in person, certainly I knew him longer than many "real" people.

Even though he'd been off the air since 1992?, I feel a real sense of loss.

Happy trails, Johnny.

Kismet, I mirrow your feelings also. I really liked Johnny. Many laughs from him... RIP.

Normally when entertainers pass on I don't give a rats ass over it.
The man was funny, and just seemed so genuine whenever he was on stage. Interesting guy. I will miss him. I never cottoned to any other talk show personality. I think Leno is everything that Carson wasn't. Hence, I don't watch his show.
Vaya Con Dios Johnny!

I always watched his show. Before Carson I watched Jack Parr, and before him, Steve Allan, but Johnny Carson was my favorite. We watch Jay Leno on Monday night when he reads Headlines, but don't care for his jokes or his personality. Same for Letterman, O'brien, and the rest of them.

I don't know how many years it's been since Leno took over the show, but my wife still calls it the "Johnny Carson Show".

I remember watching him as well when he was still on The Tonight Show. He'll be missed.

I guess Johnny has been out of sight for too long for me to miss him much. It used to be a tradition to watch him.

There is no tradition to watch late night talk shows since Letterman was kicked off for Leno, and with the two of them carving out market share between them. I like them both OK. I think early Letterman is the best, and Leno's a nicer man.

I seldom watch any talk show for any length of time, would rather watch the Discovery or History channel, so I couldn't say who is good, bad, or indifferent.
But once in a while I'll catch the first part of Leno's show. I kind of like Leno too but then he's a car buff and I'm an armchair car buff half arsed hobbiest, meaning that I have an interest in cars but not so much that I'm as fanatical as I once was about them.
If y'all say Johnny Carson was a good guy then I'll believe you and share in your sorrow because you are all friends of mine.
And that's one of the things that friends do.

He was Edutsi...at least the side he shared with us. I never heard much to the contrary, so he must have been in real life too.

Leno is a motorcycle and car buff (must be nice to have the money for such collections) and Letterman has great writers, but I am another (*just* remember Steve Allen, do remember Jack Parr) "Here's Johnny" faithful that gave up late night talk shows when he quit...

I'll break *my choice* of not using tobacco in ceremony by myself to send smoke for him...my Dad died of emphysema too. Not a nice way to go, but most likely in my future too.

Johnny will be missed:( I remember the rare treat of an occation when I was allowed to stay up late enough to watch him when I was a kid. I was about 11 when he retired. My mom is a huge animal buff so she used to let me stay up late enough to watch his first guest, a zookeeper of some sort, bring out various weird little animals that would promptly crawl to the top of Johnny's head and poop and pee down his shoulder. He'd make one of his classic Johnny Carson deadpan blank stares into the camera, and we'd erupt in laughter. 4 minutes of comic gold to an 8 year old:) He did the animal thing quite a bit. That's something Jay just doesn't like to do.
I rarely watch latenight TV anymore because I just don't stay up that late, but I'm an O'Brien watcher myself now as a lot of the younger generation is. Sure his show is kind of goofy, but there are a few intelligent moments if you watch long enough. However, I will always remember those bright multicolored curtains and the swinging big band intro as a cool and collected Johny stepped out with his hands in his pockets to deliver the monolog while ever so slightly rocking onto his toes as he delivered the perfectly timed punchline.

The prince was replaced by a clown. It has never been the same, and I got out of the habit of watching.

O'Brien humor?

>Religious people are objects of scorn and distrust -- idiots and dangerous.

>Working people are saps who make poor voting decisions to the extent that they didn't like O'Brien's guy and tolerated (The dumb uncle at the family gathering. Will someone PLEASE tell him where to sit.) only to the extent that they voted the straight D ticket.

>"Red states" are the heart of yahooism -- especially SOUTHERN (Oh my God!!!) states.

> Drugs? Cool!! Recreation.

He was always a gentleman. He never hogged the spotlight like Letterman.

He helped others, you might say that he made other peoples careers, but never broke anyone.

He will live on. DVDs, VHS, The Great Carnac.

Onw of the few people that we were all on a first name basis. "Did you catch Johnny last night?" You always knew who they were talking about.

A legend. There will never be another like him.
