There is a discussion on a thread over in Frugals about knives as weapons. Same old, same old, for the most part. One of the more interesting posts:
Dont ever dismiss a knife as simply and ONLY, a tool.
Yes,...knives come in many configurations. but never underestimate them.
The planes on 9/11 were hijacked with boxcutters with 1" blades. Not Samurai swords, Rambo survival knives, daggers, ect.
Leathermans, swiss army knives, ect, ect, ect,..
are *intended* as tools. But that all rests apon whose hands its in. Kinda like firearms.
watch this video then come back and tell me if knives are only tools.

Edged Weapons

I have talked about all the problems with people who would like to take your firearms away from you many times. Well I read an article the other day that brings to light a possibly more dangerous weapon that has very little if any regulations on it. That is an edged weapon or sharp instrument commonly called a knife.
Edged weapons are among the most ancient of weapons used by humans against adversaries. Unfortunately the potential lethality of the blade is not always realized or taken into account when confronting a knife-wielding attacker. There is even the old joke about the dummy who brought a knife to a gun fight. Many people feel that a knife is less dangerous than a firearm. Perhaps I can change your mind on this a little.
Law enforcement has conducted many studies on this and developed some guide lines to follow about being attacked with such a weapon. The first video I saw was one called, "Surviving Edged Weapons." In this video they showed how if someone with a knife was within 21 feet of you they could get to you and stab or cut you before you could draw your firearm and shoot that person. The other point that is very important is that the vests that police officers wear will do nothing to stop a knife from cutting right through them.
In England right now 7 out of 20 people are killed with a knife while being mugged. In Victoria BC Canada the police have discovered that 35% of the calls that they deal with there was an edged weapon involved. In 1994, out of the 7 murders in Victoria, 6 were committed with knives. Here in America the FBI has found that attacks on police that are fatalities, 3% were involving edged weapons and 4% involved a firearm. They also found that 10% of those shot by a firearm die from their wounds while 30% die from wounds caused by an edged weapon.
One of the organizations that helps train police officers in survival methods has found that since 1980 the number of people routinely carrying knives in North America has increased by 92%. Within it's range a knife has some advantages. It never runs out of ammo or jams. It never misfires and rarely misses the intended target. It cuts bone, tendon, muscle, arteries, and veins with one thrust. A knife has better stopping capabilities and is psychological defeating. It can be concealed much easier and occupies a permanent wound channel until extracted. A knife or sharp object is also easier to build than a firearm.
Forensic Pathologists have found through autopsies that the typical death of a stab wound in a homicide case is 1 inch to 1.5 inches through the rib cage in most knife attacks the victim received multiple knife wounds. The normal cause of death are usually the last few wounds of the overall attack. Even short bladed knives can penetrate the abdomen by 8-10cm. 3cm allows penetration of the ribs and 4cm allows penetration of the heart.
If none of this gives you cause for concern about knives then I haven't done my job. I believe that it also shows that those who would ban our firearms are more worried about controlling you and I than they are about our safety. No one worries much about a person who walks around with a knife strapped on his or her side. How many people are carrying one around concealed? The facts speak for themselves in this edged weapons society.
I know people who carry a knife scar and they outnumber those who have a bullet scar. It boils down to this, knives are a very dangerous and deadly weapon and no one pays much attention to them. Now think about swards, spears, and machetes. They are real killing instruments, then there is the ax and other sharp objects like a simple screw driver that can be used to take someone's life. These are tools we use every day just like firearms so why are the politicians so worried about firearms and controlling them? Perhaps knives and such will be next. It's the person not his weapon of choice we should worry about and we didn't even talk about explosives or poison.
God Bless America and God Bless our troops still in harms way.
