$15 (fifteen $:)) for a variable-speed dremal-type tool
With 42" Flexshaft attachment & various grinding bits (1/8" shafts).

The States
Albertson's grocery stores

Originally a Father's Day special sale item.
I don't know in how many states this store-chain
(by that or other names)is found.

Cheap/inexpensive but works fine.
Labeled Buffalo Tools (St Louis based tool importer)
www.buffalotools.com

This is not industrial quality, but for occasional use.......
It does not turn at all at the lowest speed setting (0-power)
but starts to turn when the power setting gives it enough juice.
Yes it is variable speed.
Lower speeds tend to bog down when you apply much pressure,
but the higher speeds have the power.
-Slightly- larger than a Dremal brand.
It's an identical kit (by parts included)to a $70 real Dremal
with flexshaft that I've been watching in the stores.
This flexshaft looks like it will hold up.
The spring inside comes out easily, so it could be replaced if needed.
Handpiece small and comfortable.
Solid aluminum connector at tool-end.

The Dremal flexshaft alone costs $25.
This Buffalo flexshaft -almost- fits my OLD, OLD, OLD Dremal.
Slightly different threading.
I went back today to get another unit to have the flexshaft to
fit unto my Dremal, and an extra unit if the first gives out.

Dean, went to Albertson's right after work, but it was a no go. Wonder where else I can look?

Know Albertson's are in Nevada, Idaho, Utah, unsure about Montana. Unfortunately for me the two closest stores are In Tonopah ( about 120 miles ) or Reno (about 130 miles ). And lately we have some really obdurate* Highway Patrolmen who pull you over for anything.

( *Obdurate: hardened in wickedness or wrongdoing. )

We have a dozen Albertson's in this area.

Store locator at : http://www1.albertsons.com/corporate/storefinder/alb_storefinder.asp?cat=8&subcat=0

One store had them up front (passed them after I checked out).
One store had them on the end of an aisle with a huge flashlight
(also a Father's Day special).
Might check discount tool stores for same or similar.
Since it's one of the China imports,
I bet it gets lots of different labels on it.

Aha!
Finally found a link to exactly what I bought.

I will check around at some of the discount tool stores and see what comes up.

I just bumped this up to say I finally saw and bought this tool at the store (Albertson's) today, after not finding it when ddean first mentioned it. I haven't used it on anything serious, but it looks like a decent tool for $15. I won't have to use my RotoZip as a large, awkward, noisy grinder anymore :)

It seems to be a standard item that they carry
in the hardware/tool aisle for $20 normally here.
Usually I've seen it either on the top or bottom shelf.
It doesn't stand out so you have to look around.

I've only used it with the flex extension.
The instructions were not clear re assembly.

To assemble, unscrew the plastic collar surrounding the 'chuck',
-Pull- the end of the cable spring out of the flex tubing a few inches,
then insert it into the chuck like you would any bit.
-Tighten- well, although threaded, it has a tendency to slip after a few minutes vibration.
Anything that you can do to enlarge or flatten the part that goes into the check will help keep it from slipping.

Push end of flex tube back to where the collar unscrewed
and screw it on tight.

I like mine, a good buy given price and limitations originally noted.

I've been checking the Alberson's here and it's a no go. I have seen something similar at Checker Auto for $12.00, but there is no flex attachment included.
