Anyone see, and have insights on, ALEXANDER and that other one...er, TROY?

They looked like they could be wonderful scenic treatments of edged weapon use, and variety. There was a lot of fan fare when they were to open, but almost nothing since.

The lead in one (?Colin Farrell?) was on Letterman and struck me as arrogant and not nearly as interesting a person as he felt he was.

And Brad Pitt surprised me in SNATCH, so I was willing to give him a shot at being decent in TROY.

Would those who have seen these please offer their views?

I saw Troy and didn't like it. There was a lot of familiar faces in it. Hector was in Blackhawk Down so I expected him to pull out an M4 and start shooting. Legolas was too whiney and Achilles didn't speak Pikey. The man called horse wasn't bad though.

Good cinematograpy but poorly written screenplay.

Bruise is right. Except I saw Eric Banna (Hector) and thought of him as Bruce Banner from the Hulk movie a couple years ago. I thought he was going to hulk out and smash Achilles:) They kind of jockied the story around too much to make Pitt's character the focus of the film. Don't get me wrong. I like Pitt for the same reason as you did, Kis. Micky the Piikey is probably one of my favorite all time movie characters. However, the Illiad is my favorite story. I really hated to see how they had glittered it up so much.

I didn't see Alexander. I really don't care for Collin. He seems too much like a groomed bad boy actor not the real deal. Also, i find him kind of full of himself. What really irks me is that EVERYONE hated that movie and everyone that worked on the film flattly blames the American public for being homophobic because Alexander was bi-sexual. Hello? The movie was a 3 hour borefest! you made a crappy film. get over yourselves. One producer even wanted to make it all arty-farty for the rest of the world and make a "dumbed-down action flick" for America. That's a really nice way to treat the people that line your pockets with money. Treat them like little idiot monkeys that can't understand/fear homosexuals. Hollywood is so stupid sometimes.

I think they all just need to get over themselves and follow the Jerry Bruckheimer rule. If the script sucks, get handsome actors and blow up a lot of sh**. It's a sure fire way to at least make your money back;)

OK, but what about their toys?

Swords, daggers, keris, stuff? Fight scenes, hand-to-hand stuff?

C'mon, I'm living vicariously here.

I liked Troy. It wasn't great, and there was a lot not to like about it, but overall I found it entertaining. It was a long movie, and I didn't find myself getting bored, but then again, I did see it with my wife ;)

There's some cool hand-to-hand, especially the opening fight scene between Achilles and some giant dude, but overall, most of the fights are at the epic scale--large armies clashing, fleets of ships, etc.

It definitely has the current Hollywood feel--lots of imagery and special effects, but not a lot of substance and depth. Still, overall, I'd say it's worth the price of a rental.

Sorry, Kis. got off on a bit of a rant:D. Troy had some pretty good fight scenes. Pitt smites a few guys by jumping and stabbing them in the soft part around the head and shoulders. Also, the fight between him and Hector was pretty good from what i remember. The battle scenes were a little too epic in nature to the fact that they were so "bird's eye view" that all you saw was little gray humanoid forms falling on top of themselves and one another. Not too many scenes that like those you saw in Braveheart.

I haven't seen Alexander, as i have stated, but i would imagine there was good deal of long spear and short sword fighting as well as neat feild tactics and whatnot. Isn't it thought that Alexander may have brought the first KLO to the region where it evolved into the Khukuri? Weapon experts help me out here, please:)

So Josh, did your wife like the ground battles or the impressive CGI best?.... Or, was it Brad Pitt's naked butt he made sure to show a minimum of 16 times:D
I remember this because my fiance made sure to point it out with a little squeal every time it popped up;)

The critics did not like Alexander. If anything, portraying the hero as bi should have helped in critical review, but it did not. I'm no expert, but doubt there is enough or any historical evidence to conclude he was bi. He mourned the death of his best friend- big deal, so would I. Perhaps that was unusual in that time.

There is a thread over at SFI about Oliver Stone blaming "raging fundamentalism in morality" for Alexander's flop in the US. Did any one see the peoples choice awards last night? Many shows with gay characters won awards. "Moral fundamentalism" is not raging.

Some one at SFI made the comment
Well, if I went out and made a film that lost over 100 million domestically, I'd find outlets for my rage too...
I could care less if Alexander is gay, I just didn't see the movie because I heard it was really poor.
I mean, why do film makers get all upset when they make controversial movies only to find out there's controversy about it? Sheesh...
Anyway. I have heard good things about troy. For a sword enthusiasts perspective click here

Tell me if the link doesn't work.

I thought that the movie was too long, and some of the fight scenes did not make sense.

I didn't look at the sword link, but I believe that the Greeks liked their swords shorter than in the movie, because the Spartans liked to get real close when they killed people.

Brad Pitt was great in 12 Monkeys, but was miscast as Achilles.

I can not imagine ever throwing away a shield, if using a short sword. This made no sense at all.... it happened in the fight scene between Paris and the King of Sparta (?).

My wife fell asleep. If they dumped the lousy dialog, the fight scenes were entertaining at times. There was too much poorly directed dialog.

The story plot deviated from the mythology, especially regarding the priest who warned about the Greek horse, not Paris. Spartans were really spartan - not like in the movie. I believe that the women fought...the Amazons.

I liked Troy, didnt like Alexander.

Lots of terrific action sequences in Troy, especially the storming of the beaches by the Greeks. Some of the cast were great in their roles: Bana was fine as Hector and likewise O'Toole as Priam. Would have picked a different actress for the role of Helen though.

Alexander? I really did not believe a big budget movie about possibly history's greatest commander could bore me to tears. I was wrong.
