Now that the second season of Alone is back on the History Channel, I'm curious as to what items our SURVIVORS! and survivalists would choose.

Xtian really got me thinking about what 9 things I'd want to accompany my GSO 6 in his thread

If you're not familiar with the show, the premise is that 10 auditioned outdoors people are dropped off on Vancouver Island in Canada with their 10 items and camera gear and they film themselves surviving for as long as they can. The winner gets a cash prize and also a free weight loss program :D

Someone correct me, but in season one most guys tapped out in 2 days and the winner lasted about 6 months, right? Some seemed to have the mindset they'd be alone for a year, so keep the long term in mind when choosing items.

Here's a link to the contestant bios. If you open their profiles, it lists their 10 items.

Here's my picks (keep in mind this is just for fun as I'd actually die in seconds left alone in the woods):

1 saw-silky katana boy
1 550 parachord – 20m
1 ax
1 multi-seasonal sleeping bag that fits within provided backpack
1 large (no more than 2 quart) pot, includes lid
1 flint or ferro rod set-a big one! Like 6 by 0.5 inches
1 small gauge gill net (8 m x 2 m OR 1.5 m deep x 3.6 m long and 2” [50 mm] mesh)
1 300-yard roll of nylon single filament fishing line and 25 assorted hooks
1 hunting knife-GSO 6!!!!!!
1 sharpening stone
EDIT: I traded out a canteen or water bottle for a gill net after Tricky talked some sense into me :)
I ditched the ground tarp once I realized a basic tarp is provided without counting towards the 10 items. I also traded out a flashlight when I saw that a headlamp is provided. I added a saw and fishing set.

Here's the master list. What would your 10 items be? Feel free to leave things generic like I did or mention specific models and brands of gear.

Silver, you don't list any form of fish catching items, which would be the major source of protein there. You plan on building your own fish traps?

Good point, good point. I had a gill net as my 11th item and hated removing it from the list. I am leaning heavily towards fire/shelter and water. Maybe I could give up the canteen for the net for a little better balance.

I think one could forgo the canteen, there should be a lot of plastic bottles washing up on shore.

What type of axe or hatchet would you guys go with?

I am no where near as knowledgeable as you guys and so cannot contribute to the list of all items :thumbdn:
But in saying that, it seems you are all on point. And if you cant fit fishing traps on the list and worse comes to worse, making a fishing spear could be an option

Silver,

Are you going on a survival quest or are you planning a stay at The Ritz Carlton? Wow! What a list! :D

Just kidding buddy. Keep 'em coming!

To you the GB axe people: axes would mostly be dead weight in the hot and humid jungles. Just saying!

BTW, I do own a GB small forest hatchet... Edition: Brain fart! I meant a Wildlife hatchet! at myself!

Keep in mind the HUGE list is the master list to choose from. But with my 10 items, I'm confident I could survive indefinitely...... in my own backyard.................... until I ran out of groceries.................. :D

In the context of the list for the show, we're talking about western, coastal Canada. An axe would be pretty invaluable.

My list… (probably change my mind, but it’s a start)

1. 1 12×12 ground cloth/tarp (grommets approved)
2. 1 550 parachord – 20m
3. 1 saw
4. 1 multi-seasonal sleeping bag that fits within provided backpack

6. 1 flint or ferro rod set
7. 1 small gauge gill net (8 m x 2 m OR 1.5 m deep x 3.6 m long and 2” [50 mm] mesh)
8. 1 hunting knife Survive 6
9. 1 300-yard roll of nylon single filament fishing line and 25 assorted hooks (No lures)
10. 5 lbs of pemmican (traditional trail food made from fat and proteins)

My knife would be a GSO 6…

I am not sure how it would be to need to sharpen axe and knife, especially 3v with a rock. That's the one reason I may lean towards 1095 or A2 instead. Or someway take the sharpening stone along instead of one other item.

The moisture there is incredible. In the thread in Wilderness survival about this same show, contestant Dave Macintyre is commenting on his fire lay. And how the rotting moss beneath is soggy. Its amazing.

I recall Dave Canterbury mentioning in one of his videos that anywhere north of OH, having an axe in the wilderness was a MUST have for him.
