As most of you know, the Army began calling me back to its warm embrace this summer. I requested a delay to give me time to graduate (May), and was waiting from July until this month to learn if my request would be granted.

Friday the 9th, I was notified that my request had been denied. I approached my ROTC commander (I've been taking MilScience and doing PT w/ the cadets), and apprised her of the situation.

To shorten a longer story, she called the Army Reserve HR, and has been speaking to them for over a week. I've been pretty much on the coals for the last week, wondering if I should be studying, or using the last couple weeks I had to visit friends (my new report-in date was 9 Oct).

About 15 minutes ago, I received a call from St. Louis. I have been granted a delay until January. This will give me time to finish the semester, which I've been in for several weeks.

And I am truly thankful. No, it's not everything I wanted, but it does mean I haven't wasted the last couple of months, and should still have time to visit friends and family before reentering service.

Well Uwinv a brief respite is better than no respite at all. I'm sorry you didn't get all you wanted and I hope you can make it by here before you go. Methinks that would be just pretty wonderful.:D

Heh. Uncle, I also just got back today the nice little ax I got at the Blade show.

One positive thing about being so unsure, the last few weeks, is that I'm REALLY thankful to be able to finish this semester. :D

I'd love to be able to visit you before I go in.

J

It could've been better, it could've been worse - at least you know where you stand now.

Best of luck to you. I have a feeling that things will work out.

I miss the Army. Of course I was in during peacetime and had to leave because of disability and not on my terms.

Best of luck to you and stay safe.

So, John, you'll close Winter and begin Spring in the Army.
I'm glad you have a little time.

Good news!

maybe more will change for the better by the end of the year.

Am encouraged to pray more...
Tom

The fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. You're always welcome to pray for me, Tom.

Sort of OT...but a question for those of you aquainted with how the Army does business. My niece was active duty for four years and got out about 18 months ago. She then got a job, had a baby and moved away from her first "post-separation" address. Recently she received a forwarded letter from the Army requiring her to go back in for a physical. Sounds like they are considering recalling her to active duty.

My niece is choosing to ignore the letter and pretending the Army won't find her, or forget about her...something like that. Her action strikes me as being very unwise. How does the Army handle people like her? I assume that there are others in her "boat"...just hoping that the Army will go away. What happens to her next? TIA.

Jeff

Spectre, it's good you got half a glass full at least.

devo55, they do not "forget you" or "go away." There are criminal implications, and federal custodial facilities are unpleasant places for persons used to being free in the western world. At a minimum, get legal advice from someone who is actually familiar with such problems.

Good news. Thanks for your wilingness to serve. But for your guys....
Terry

Jeff,

I've been told that about 70% of IRR (still with some of their 8 year obligation left, but not actively training) that have been reactivated have not reported in. Apparently, there have been no repercussions for most of them.

That said, if a young lady has a child and no "family care plan", that is reason to be excused from service. Personally, I would go to the physical if ordered to do so.

John

Well,Hell, fellas...there must be some kinda rule that only the best get chosen....

John is the best of us...he is soft spoken, pragmatic, honest and has a true integrity that is rare today...

It has been a priviledge to get to know him...and speak with him on the phone now and again.

John, If you need anything...just holler....I'll start work on that bigger knife we talked about....only I can't promise I'll have it done by the first of the year...I will try though.

It is my fervent wish that every man and woman who serves our country has such an outstanding support group behind them...like the folks her in the Cantina.

Shane

Shane,

It's been great gettin' to know you better, too.

Shucks, I won't be able to take that big lopper with me, so no rush...I just want one, at some point. :D (Shane's Soldier's Knife is a really neat knife, fellas, just about the ideal size for a hard-use service knife. I can just see the potential it'll have when built into a large bowie/small bolo size.)

I have been blessed to have good folks rooting for me. I feel for those who have to do difficult things without good people in their corner.

John

Hey John,

Glad to hear you can finish your semester. And like Gravertom said, maybe something will change by the end of the year for you.

I remember from a while back you said you wanted to try and go back as an officer. Does that happen only after you graduate? I think that is a pretty good idea if you can make it happen.

Well, if luck, timing, and worldly politics happen to find you at the Blade show next year, I believe I still owe you the first two rounds....

Time is always on your side. Good luck, John, and I hope something else comes up to delay your Army return... until you wish it.
