OT; the CBS report on crime in the UK

This is totally off-topic; apologies in advance...

Can anybody who saw the CBS report on violent crime rates in the UK and the USA let me know what was actually said? The UK media 'reported' it, but their coverage is almost entirely made up of hysterical-sounding denials, including some severe truth-bending and some outright lies

(For example; the BBC claims the CBS report is 'nonsense' because some of the figures for the rate of violent crime in the UK are 4 years out of date; what they don't say is that violence has increased dramatically in those 4 years (according to UK govt figures), including a 20% rise for the last 12 months - which surely means the position is *worse* than CBS presented it)

The government is obviously scared by this report, or it wouldn't have called out its media servants in such force to smear it. I'd like to know what it said.

Tom, I visited the UK when I was a young man and loved it. I actually entertained the idea of living there for awhile I liked it so much. The more I read of your posts the more I think I have waited too long and things have changed to much. England was not that bad 40 years ago.

Thanks for the URL. As far as I can see, the report is broadly accurate (though of course heavily slanted in some respects; it refers to the unprecedented rise in gun deaths and shootings, but doesn't mention the gun ban, let alone the fact that the number of gun deaths has rocketed since the confiscations)

Rusty's rule of thumb #491:

If they call someone "The Honorable" so and so, that individual will already have done things to you that no self-respecting prostitute would hold still for.

How long has the gun ban been in effect? Is it total? I seem to recall reading about some collectors who had to give up their collections piecemeal. When did the violence really take off?

I don't know about crime in the UK but it seems that the oppressive gun laws are just not working, any more than they work here.I would like to see the law making body of the government, create a law followed up by tracking its effectiveness,if with in,say one year the law is found not to be effectve it should be removed.

Maybe if you made all politicians wear a polygraph all the time...and hook it to automatically administer very strong aversive shock to the genitals when they lied...

otherwise, the truth is just not in them.

Maybe the French were right in liberally (LOL) applying the guillotine.

Isn't it interesting that CBS, which is one of the Big Anti-Gun Media Networks, is now reporting on how gun control is failing in the UK? And consider that they probably doctored their editorial/reporting to slant toward the "well, there might be a slight problem here" end of the spectrum (away from the "disater in the making" end. Like the way Soviets had to essentially turn all Pravda broadcasts around to figure out what the truth was). If that's the case, you can imagine what it must really be like there. Some reports I have read about UK and Austrialia seem to indicate that they are rapidly headed the way of South Africa, where crime seems to be something of an organized spectator sport right now. Ugh.

Could the governments be getting more and more worried about protecting themselves from harm by their constituency than their constituency from harm by other ( non-political ) predators? Nah
