Just got a new job and my current employer said they'd do anything to keep (except pay me what I am worth I suppose - cynic in me) and I am now waiting for a counter offer. Problem is I need to send confirmation forms off tomorrow..... what do I do !!

I hate the corporate world!!!!!!!:grumpy:

What do you mean hold out !!

It's 16h30 and they still haven't made me an offer - told them 09h00 !!

This often happens. Someone finds a new job, gives notice, and the old employer sweetens the deal & talks them into staying. The VAST MAJORITY of people who do take the deal and stay are gone within a year.

You'll be thought of as an unloyal deserter, and they'll take the time to figure out how to replace or do without you on their schedule, rather than on yours. Then they'll push you out, trump up a reason to fire you, or just dead-end you. Either that, or you'll simply become miserable there again because the problems that made you want to leave will NOT be fixed. It never happens.

Do you really want to work somewhere that requires you to threaten to quit to get any respect?

Make a clean break and leave. Good luck.

My old lady gave me the same advice (Mom not Jill)

They brought in a new guy for a field sales position on the sly and then asked me to train him up - he is on double the wage I am on !!

It seems to me the handwriting is on the wall. Go with your gut feeling where ever that takes you. Best of luck to you.

Brendan?

Go for the new job. You are young enough to make LOTS of more mistakes, whether it works out or not.

Loyalty to an employer, or BY an employer is (sadly) pretty much a thing of the past. Be honorable, but be self-focused; do nothing in anger.

Best to Jill.

In the IT field its never a good idea to keep a job after you have told your employer that you are interested in leaving. I have read to many times where a person did this and the old employer kept them just long enough to find someone else. This even happened to a couple of friends of mine. Even if you do stay and they arn't looking to replace you the fact that the employer knows you are interested in leaving will produce allot of tension and allot of stress for you. So my advice is to take the new job and start fresh.

Take the new job and don't look back. In a different situation a nephew of mine got fired a while back by an egotistical ignorant sonuvabitch that fired him for insubordination.
It wasn't but a few days later and the egotistical sonuvabitch was fired himself, partly for firing my nephew.:D
Anyway my nephew had a better job at a substantial increase in wages within a week and that's with the job market here in Tulsa at an all time low.:D

Leave tomorrow - start new job on 5 Jan !!

Looking forward to it, I'm touched by the well wishings and kind words by the people I work with. Didn't realise so many people liked me !!

:(

We just don't want the kitty to go hungry, Brendan. It's been through enough.

Well Done Brendan!

I also start a new job on the 5th of January :)

Earlier this year I worked for a company and they brought in new people for the same role-and also payed 'em more than the existing staff. I voted with my feet and got another job.

The new job will be my 5th in 12 months-from clearing tables to biz2biz sales with some serious money to be made. It's been a busy year but worth it.

Never let anyone get away with not giving you the respect you are due.

:)

Happy Christmas, Brendan.

(When you look back in your senior years, it won't be the job you recall, but the people you have met, liked, disliked, and laughed and cried with. Savor these moments.)

Best to Jill

I've been really lucky in my career. I've been working for almost 30 years (3 places, 6 companies due to aquisitions) and can honestly say that I've had very good direct managers. Some were very competent, others were less so, but great guys. The current one is both. I only have to look around for a VERY short distance to know how unusual that is.
