OT-The Nightmare Bugs of Hell

Spectre- I'm not happy. I like killer bugs too. I like reading about them and watching them on TV. I like to see wounds and survivors. But this guy gives me the Death Stalker Scorpian, but does not tell me very much about the creature. He has time for lots of words and some bad language, but can't tell me much.

That's not right. If I were a meaner person, I'd wish a Death Stalker Scorpian upon him.

This is more than I wanted to know. Much more!

I strongly suggest NOT reading about the Bot fly! I am off to get a suit of armor and a flame thrower in case any of the critters come anywhere near me.

I didn't read the Bot fly part. Just the thought of Alien gives me the jeepers, and I understand the idea came from the Bot larval stage.

on the giant hornets (on animal planet). Eee-gads. A mere 30 of the monsters could wipe out a hive of regular honey bees. They killed the poor little guys by the thousands. If we didn't have thumbs and big frontal lobes we'd be in trouble.

I saw that too Silver...really creepy.

I'm happier dealing with the zombies...

Most critters don't bother me.

Venomous arachnids? Bring them on. Huge wasps, killer bees? It won't be the first time that I've been swarmed and I have a finely tuned backhanded slap that would make any air defense network proud. Brown recluses, hobo spiders? Scars are cool.

But parasites? It's a different story. Not just any parasites, mind you. Mosquitos? They don't eat much. Leeches? Don't make me laugh. Ticks? Easy to find, easy to remove. Liver flukes? Hell, if you've ever eaten sushi you've probably got a few already and they're very courteous guests. Mine don't seem to bother me any.

But that botfly...

The human botfly is a personal nightmare of mine. That one bothers me quite a bit, which is why I find it so interesting. The following links are definitely not for the squeamish but they are informative.

The story behind the "eye" picture:
Clicky.

Treatment if professional medical help is not available (and another horror story) can be found here: Clicky.

Just for the record, the human botfly is not native to the US. I don't remember where I read that but it's the sort of thing that I would remember.

Not that it makes me feel any better. These things creep me out to the point that I'd consider it a phobia, if it didn't creep everyone else out just as much.

Munk - here ya go. I didn't know the english name, just the latin one. here's what I found in one of my reptile magazines, unfortunately the one that was at the bottom end of the pile...I'll try to translate it as good as I can:

Leiurus quinquestriatus:

Monotypic, there are no subspecies. size - about 7-8cm. living in algeria, libia, niger, sudan, egypt, arabic penisula and turkey. habitat: deserts, sandy deserts, living in small caves they did themselves. likes to live close to human settlements as well. when stinging, they eject about 8,2mg of poison. very deadly, although I think statements about being the deadliest kind may be exagerated - there are plenty of others as well, like tityus [south america], centruroides [mexico], androctonus [africa] and buthus occitanus [north africa, the same kind living in south europe isn't as deadly. my father was stung by one - three days of permanent pain. he said it was the worst he ever felt, and usually he isn't comlaining much.

regards, Keno

Did I read that right? Caves they make themselves? Thanks for the data.

What's the problem with the botfly's, btw? The rabbit is still edible. Just trim the capsule of bot away.

Poor guy was balanced on 0, with an ugly gray chiclet when I came in this morning. I turned him back to pretty red again.
