Seriously, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. I like the design so well, I decided I want one done in W-1 with a Scandinavian grind blade profile. More to come, have to get to grinding.

Sarge Sarge.....is that anything like Bam Bam?

:p

IT'S ALIVE, IT'S ALIVE,  :D

Here's a pic of the freshly ground blade, ready for heat treatment (it's in the oven right now). What y'all think for the handle, wood, or antler? I've got both. The finger guard will be brass, 'cause I don't have any "white metal".
By the time I run out of beer this evening, this knife will be ready to go.

Nice grinding.

Antler.

Thanks Aardvark. Okay gents, that's one vote for antler.

The antler I have is an excellent piece from an axis deer, very nice, very dense, hardly any marrow at all. The wood is a piece of as yet unidentified South American hardwood that was given to me by Jerry Peasley (Pappy). It's dense, hard, and dark reddish brown in color.

Gotta be quick, as soon as the blade comes out of the oven, I'm off to a friend of mine's shop to make the handle.

Hmm, from your description, that would could be Ironwood or Granadillo, both of which make very nice handles. Almost don't need a finish, they're that hard. Pretty full of oil, too. I've used them both to make kitchen knife handles.

Sarge,
Scared to put a sharp POINT on that blade?? Ahh,well I can see since you been out you've become PC!Kinda sad!Sniff once you were.......& now you've become...... NEXT ,YOU WILL BE VOTING FOR HILLARY! BWAAAAAAA!
THE DUCK!

Pappy said the best he knew it came from the Amazon region and was called Ite (eetay). Never heard of it, but I have heard of Ipe (Brazilian walnut).

Still, let's see if we get any more votes for antler (less work for me, sound like a retired guy or what?)

Now look here ya dadburn Durba hoarding duck, just 'cause I'm retired now don't mean I've stuck flowers in my hair and learned to sing Kumbaya. :grumpy:
Good to hear from you buddy, your old Henckels straight razor is still giving me outstanding service, and we won't talk about that BGRS with the odd maker's mark (I wonder what them funny little flags mean....). :D

Zoinks, heat treatments done, blade's the color of a good amber ale. Time to saddle up and head to the shop for fun with handles. Looks like antler it is.

Stay tuned...........

ROTFLMAO!!! :D

my vote = hardwood - and post a pic when you're done!

Looks great Sarge! How about antler, with a piece of horn or wood about 1/2" thick, right behind the guard, with a thin piece of brass between them? (so much for less work) :p I think that contrast would look superb!

Satin blade, brass guard, black horn, thin brass, antler.

'course you could keep it simple and just use antler. :o

Steve

Well fellers, antler it is. :D

As Norm Abrams would say on the New Yankee Workshop, "this one's ready for the finishing room".

Next installment, "Have scabbard, will tote". ;)
