Ok this one is for Rusty, Munk, et al.
I have a customer of mine that wants to do a little horse trading on a hot tub. He offered part of the payment in the form of a Thunder 5 hand gun plus some cash for the balance on his tub. I mean I could get a new one for about the same price, but he's throwing in the nylon sheath and several hundred rounds of each kind of ammo this hoss shoots.
I know it's a bulky, not very pretty thing but have you guys ever handled one? I was looking for something for home protection that someone that is a sucky shot (myself) could at least hit something with. I have a shotgun, but my new place has narrow hallways.
Anyway, i'm eager to hear your thoughts.
TIA
Jake

$500 for a .410/.45 long colt snubbie????

jaysussmerrynjoesuf.

There's a reason he wants to trade it. He can't find a reason to use it, either.

yeah, $300 is the most I would take in trade on it and I've always liked the gun, but only as a novelty.

Thanks, Kis.
This is the kind of stuff i want to hear. They guy already tried to take me to the cleaners by calling it "custom" blah blah blah. he didn't take into account that i'm young and the first place i go for info is the net, then i get it varified by you guys:D So i probably won't get one from him...unless i screw him over on something else like he tried to screw me. What goes around, comes around. etc etc etc.
I just thought the idea of shooting .45s and .410 shells was kind of cool. I'm not a gun guy at all. As in I have a 12g shotgun and a .22 for critters. I'm looking to buy something that goes BANG, but i dunno what i want yet. Also, i'm looking for ease of maintenance and not too expensive. It doesn't have to be up to sharp shooter specs. I'll be lucky to hit the target anyway;) Just something kinda cheap and fun.

Thanks guys
Jake

Kis is right. If you want to throw in the correct kind of nylon sheath for this trade, wear a condom. Tell him to wear it, as you're the one being reamed.

(now, that's just about as sick as this munk can go.)

Thanks for the link, Kis.
I figured it was about as good as it looked...ugly. I was really never considering seriously, but i had never seen one. I wanted to see if the gun guys around here laugh, cry, or roll their eyes and howl.
As far as what i'm looking for in a firearm... hmmm, well i don't rightly know. I know how to handle a pistol or a long gun. I grew up in the country so even through we never had any use for them in my house(i.e. didn't hunt, no break ins) I was exposed to them...just not enough to be a very good shot. AA's .22/pellet gun thread got me thinking about getting a .22 to shot targets with because it would be safer and not over penetrate, but at the same time a big hand cannon that could blow the side off a barn would be kind of cool too.
Weight isn't an issue nor does it have to be a carried weapon. I kind of like revolvers better than semi's because i can understand them a little easier. I don't mind blowing some cash of a box of rounds from time to time, but i really don't want something that costs 3 bucks a shot or something. Also i really don't want to spend more than 400 or 500 bucks tops. I might hate it or get too scared of it when kids come into the picture in the next few years.
What do you all suggest?

Jake

I just sold one for a friend whose husband died. Not a lot of interest. It went for $275.00 in 95+%. It also looked unfired. Not real impressed witht he quality. See them in Movies alot because of the looks.

Jake, I would go the gunshow and look at some used revolvers. Police trade-ins maybe like the S&W Mod 19 which shoots 357 mag and 38 specials. Price in the $150-175 range. Another option is the Makarov which will cost around $150. You can get a case of 1000rds of MAK ammo for around $80 which will give you plenty of practice. Those would be my choices for an inexpensive usable handgun.

Thanks, Ice:) That's very helpful info.
Meanoldman, i agree with you. The Thunder 5 looks like movie gun. kind of reminds me of a giant starter pistol or something made out of a scrapped carboretor.

Jake

Hey, Jake. My .02.... That little pistol would be very unfriendly to shoot. Probably why the other guy doesn't want it.

Like others have said, a used .38/.357 with 4-6" barrel S&W, Colt or even Taurus, is a gun you will always keep, be happy and most importantly HIT with.

Sometimes people (new shooters) jump into autopistols and find they can't shoot like in the movies. I tried to talk a doctor friend of mine not to buy a Glock, but nooo. Frustrated man after a few range trips. Fire a few thousand rounds thru your new S&W Model 66 and get the most important thing, confidence you can score.

Then, like khuks, start looking around for fun/challenge/learning aquisitions.

I have a shotgun, but my new place has narrow hallways.

Been a while since I've read the gun mags, but a shotgun with birdshot is still probably the most-recommended home defense tool. A shot shell doesn't penetrate into the next house, a few layers of drywall stop the smaller pellets, and the noise has a way of grabbing an intruder's attention.

One writer, years ago, said he'd replaced the siren on his home alarm with a recording of a pump shotgun being racked. He felt it focused priorities.

As far as shot dispersal goes, a couple of years ago I took a shot a pheasant with a shotgun and hit a limb of a tree that I hadn't even seen as I tracked the bird. The bird escaped, but that limb will never forgive me. It had the plastic wad/shot-cup imbedded in it, It must have been 10-15 feet away from me. The shot pattern doesn't expand a whole bunch in the first 5 yards or so, no matter what the choke.

If you don't have a need for a pistol, then why get one now?

If you do, wait around, folks here will have great ideas. I think Rusty just got a Smith and Wesson Model 10 military and police bull barrel .38 for a couple of hundred dollars--money he can always get back should he decide to sell it.

Or the Model 19, as mentioned...shots .357 as well as .38. Figure about $10 or less for a box of 50 .38s.

Your local police probably traded in virtually unused .38s when they went to the 9mm. You might check and see where they made the deal. Might still be some around.

I got my model 10 for $139 when the big push to the 9s first started. I eventually traded it for a Chief's Special (5-shot, .38 snubbie), but then I really don't shoot pistol much.

If this guy just started an itch, you can ignore it or scratch it. But don't buy new, and try and stay reality-based. Some baby cops in my apartment building ended up with .44s and .41s after they got into their respective forces*. I used to cringe when they'd call me and show me their new toys. I lived in the next apartment. :(

Be well and safe.

*(If you've never seen a .44 Auto Mag pistol, it's hard to imagine the size, heft, and sheer lethality it projects. These guys pulled a plastic case out from under their couch, and popped it open with grins on their faces like kids who won the Country Fair prize. :) )

If your looking for home defense, go with a 12 ga. Fairly cheap, lots of aftermarket bells and whistles to customize it. With a little training and practice can manuerver quite well in tight quarters. Also lots of non--lethal ammo for them. From a legal standpioint this advantageous as you can escalate the level of damage. First round rubber pellets to oo buck. From a safety standpoint, in a God forbid mistake at 3 in the morning, in the dark, not quite awake with adrenalin pumping, shooting a loved one or friendly with less than lethal is always preferred. Handguns take a lot of practice to beome proficient. This can also be expensive. Look at how many gunfights there are involving trained people with now one getting hit. And most of these occur at 8-15 feet. My father-inlaw was a prison guard in Arkansas for awhile, and when theywould go corner an escapee, usually just the sound of racking a round wouldconvince them it was time to give it up. Just something about a shotgun that is intimidating. Just my 2 cents.
