OK this is a little off topic for this section, although it applies to most of us here.

When you hogs are dealing with private party trades or sales, what is a reasonable amount of time for the payment/goods to be sent off? I know this is the holiday season and it is snowing like mad in parts of the CONUS. Let's say, under normal times of the year.

The reason I posted here instead of say the GBU section is that I respect your opinions and I know there is a lot of deals going on here. If this is an improper post, strike me down with INFI!!! :D

IMHO,

- payment should go out as soon as possible. I try for within 48 hours of deal making. Sometimes I don't hit it, but let the other party know. Communication is essential.

I would say that with the seasonal dreaded slooooooooowwww lines at the Post Offices, a bit of leeway should apply.

- shipping should occur within 24-48 hours of receipt of funds. Again, circumstances may preclude hitting this goal, but the other party should be informed.

Also, IMHO, the all-to-often found "lazy" approach to communication causes more ill thoughts to occur during transactions than just about any other factor. Suspicions of having been "screwed over" almost always surface first, setting a sour tome for the rest of the deal.

I'll let a couple others weigh in, then I will move this over to GBU.

Good topic given the circumstances of the season.

Both shipment and payment shoudl go out ASAP (as agreed); how fast they are delivered is a whole different thing. Normally it takes me up to 24 hours (during workdays) to get ny stuff out, post office is closed on weekends (except Saturday mornings) so above applies only to Monday-Friday.

in my "good" dealings, e-mails are sent back and forth with payment was sent and received and package was sent and received. then no one is setting around wondering what is going on getting bent out of shape.

too bad business wouldn't take this advice when they were selling knives :(

My schedule usually allows me to send payment or ship a knife the next day, unless it is the weekend then I'll do it on Monday. If I know the person and they are buying a knife I will ship the knife before the payment arrives, if it a trade, we usually send at the same time.
I would have to agree, the most important factor is communication, both side worry alot less if there is good communication.

i try to ship with in 24 hours (or the next working day). i live in a rural area, the P.O. kind of sets it's own hours in my area. they close 2 hours for lunch, take every holiday off and even make up phony holidays to surprise you with after driving 15 miles for a drop off. (groundhog day, uncle freds operation, milk the cow day)

if i get payment on a friday afternoon (our mail comes at 3:30pm) there is usually no way i can make the connection.

also i have dropped off packages on one day and the P.O. misses getting it to the larger P.O. at the main sorting facility.

connections are way better if you don't live in bumfrick egypt.
