This was given to me by my mom, it was her father's knife. He died when she was four, and that was in 1945. It has Case XX stamped on the hatchet handle and that is the only marking on the whole Knife/hatchet combo. The sheath is a little worn and tore in some places, but overall it is still intact. It has a patent date of Feb 5 1935 stamped on the sheath. Here are the pics.

Can anybody pin down a date and current value?

I have no idea but a good place to post and find out would be over at Knifeforums.com in the The Bernard Levine Custom Knives and Collector's Forum. He or someone there could more then likely give you some idea about it. Nice peice by the way. Good luck.

There's also a Case forum over there at knifeforums.

Neat piece. Very nice shape.

An interesting device. Do you have any idea what the handle material is?

Could you post a picture of the hatchat attached? (I assume that it does).

Thanks.

I've got no idea what the handle is made of it looks like plastic it has some white fiber impregnated in the handles. My camera takes horrible close-ups, so I couldn't get a nonfuzzy pic of the handles. I alos noticed there are inch ruler markings stamped on the "take-down" lever. The knife blade is stamped Case and below it has "TE???EOX".

Thanks a lot.

Just imagine if your grandfather had had a nice 15" AK. Then he wouldn't have had to fool with 2 devices, and wouldn't have had to worry about the joint when chopping (I certainly would).

Still interesting, though.

I kinda like it but that's as much as I can say. n2s will probably know everything we want to know about it.

Cavedweller--You have a very nice Case Knife/Axe--CASE/XX dates it from 1940 to 1965--The handle material is celuloid (second best next to stag). Current value will be some where between $350-$500 depending on condition and collector interest. What ever you do DON'T polish it. Clean it with soap and water to remove dirt and dry completely. Coat with a light film of good gun oil. :) :)

Vigorously.

Seems I've heard that celluloid billiard balls had a tendency to
explode in the middle of a game.

Here is an excellent article on the problems associated with celluloid knife handles, from the Links on Bernard Levine's web page. When in doubt about an old or unusual knife, you can usually find the answer in Levine's Guide 4th Ed., his web page (linked to his sig on the forum), or in his Forums here or at KF. If BRL doesn't know the answer, it's most likely because no one has asked the question yet:)

The old Nitro-Cellulose Film for movies and still cameras is very dangerous now, it can burn and even explode.
I've never heard of a knife handle doing anything like that. The nitro film was dangerous when it was first made and the danger from the knife handles would be well known.

BTW, that is a cool knife/ax.
It's nice to have things that belong to your grandfather. My grandfather gave me his ring about 6 months before he died.
