Things have been hectic on the farm and hot and humid so we got our farmsitter coming and we are going to go here:

Except we are going for the weekend and doing some side hiking. Hopefully the campsite by the falls will be unoccupied. We have never hiked there before and we are psyched!!

Looks nice Hollow...

Hey...I hiked along Clifton Springs and John Bryant last week. While there, I ran across about 12 goats running wild. I don't know if they were there intentionally or if they were runaways from the dairy though...thought you'd get a laugh out of that.

.

I delivered some goats over that way last Saturday. I was there about 1pm, meeting some folks from Dayton. A shower hit about when we met up. I thought about calling you, but it was going to rain, and I wasn't sure you'd want to chance it. We drove into Yellow Springs and ate lunch, waited it out, and tried it again. We managed to get about 2 miles down the Cinncinati Pitts Stagecoach trail and a WICKED rainshower hit. Soaked us to the bone! Luckily we had dry clothes! Hope they weren't my goats. Mine were babies and safely locked in the topper of the buyers truck when we last saw them.

Oh yea there is a nest of wild honeybees in a hollow cedar no more than a quarter mile down the trail! It is right on the trail too! One thing I noticed is last year I did kind of a loop, coming back on the South Gorge trail. However this year the bridge was blocked off and there was a note it was closed to allow some sensitive plants to bounce back.

No...these were grown goats. Sorry I missed you, but I was at a powwow that day anyway. The next time you even get close, let me know and I will meet up with you!

Which trail is the hive on? I *love* fresh honey!

There was a small farm next too Redbud Valley, a local nature preserve, that had a bunch of goats. They used to get loose and invade Redbud Valley and a couple of days with them being loose would create all kinds of havoc in the nature preserve.
The wild animals there would disappear until the goat smell left the woods. Sheesh do them things stink!!!!
Also the goats would eat sensitive plants that the park help were trying to get started as well as keep growing.
One of the guys, good friend of mine, threatened to take his bow in and we would all gather for a goat BBQ, never did though.
I've heard that goat is kinda like possum, once you get over the thoughts of it then it isn't all that bad eatin.;)

Yvsa,

Mmmm! Redbud Vally! Love that name ;)

Just the bucks stink. And mostly just in breeding season.

Goat is excellent. Better than beef. Similar but better than deer. The key is to eat them when they are about 3 to 4 months. Anything over 6 tastes like mutton. Roast goat leg, goat jerky and goat shish kebab is real good.

Hollow, do you know anyone who hikes frequently who is mean? I don't think I do. I was just kinda pondering here by my desk....how many rotten people like to hike?

Anyway, have a great time.

It looks beautiful, hollow... have a safe and enjoyable hike!
I'm trying to decide where to hike in the 93 degree weather rain Saturday. :(

Hollow I spent an enjoyable hour or so running down the links from the link to Pics 2 in your link. Every time I see that country I get homesick in my soul. You're a mighty lucky man to live near/in the old Cherokee Homeland.

Goat is one of my favorite meats, and I won't usually pass up a chance at it. Mostly Indian, African and West Indies cuisine. Goat jerky sounds good too.

Goat sure isn't beef, sort of like deer but closer to oxtail or mutton, but with more flavour. I'm no expert, but different types of goat and different feeds produce distinct flavours. It's always a surprise ordering it off a menu : )

Trail sandals are great until they get wet I have found.

Goat is delicious. When I was a kid my dad had summers off and we'd do all sorts of things to ease the family budget. Selling firewood, raising our own livestock etc. One summer we took up slaughtering local livestock for people in the community. Either a flat rate or a percentage of the animals processed. Some goat lady had thirty kid goats she needed be be rid of. We got half the meat. We ate more goat that summer than I've had in the next thirty years. Lean, mild and tasty.
Wish I had livestock now.
