The title says it all. See, I didn't pick my forum handle completely based on a cartoon character, I'm also a competitive runner (or at least I used to be). I haven't had a chance to do much racing since I joined the Army after high school, but tomorrow my brigade is holding a 10K (6.2 miles) as part of our sports week, so I'm running it. I'm a little rusty, but I've been putting in a few miles lately so I'm running to win it. I just got done biking the course, it looks pretty fast, just a few small hills which I'm used to from growing up and training in NW PA. Hopefully I'll have a few pics if I can get a friend to take them with my digicam. So wish me luck, I'll post results tomorrow. Thanks for looking everyone.

Give 'em hell RR, I used to get up and run five miles every morning, but nowadays I only run if something's chasing me.;)

Sarge

How long should it take to run that? I ran 6 miles in 58min one time and was pretty pleased with myself.

Well, I'm hoping for somewhere in the vicinity of 40 mins based on my recent training runs. I can run this distance in around 50 mins at a good pace, not full out. 58 isn't bad at all if you don't train for it; heck, finishing a six mile run is more than 98% of the population can handle, so you're in good company. In high school I would run 5Ks in less than 18 mins nearly every time. I'm working to get back to that level; I've got a loooong way to go. Plus I need to lose some weight; three years ago I weighed 130, now it's closer to 145. I ran my 2 mile PT test runs 2 mins slower because of all the weight I put on in Basic and AIT. I was one of the few people who actually ran slower on the Army running program.

Best of luck, man.

Haven't done any serious running since I messed up my knee durning the last half-marathon I ran about 8 years ago (steep hill, trail-running). Miss it, but not enough to have surgery.

It may be time to start a thread about "What's the best khuk to carry on a 10-K run?"

Kurt - have you heard of the Comrades Ultramarathon in South Africa mate ??

87 kilometres - winners do it in about 5 hours !!

Brendan, I haven't heard of that one specifically, but I have seen some write-ups of really insane races. Things like 135 miles through Death Valley in 135 deg heat. Incidentally, it was won by a woman; women actually have the advantage in ultra marathons for several highly debated reasons. Right now I'm just trying to work up to my first marathon; we'll see about the ultras down the road. :) And thanks for all of the well wishes everyone, they are much appreciated.

RR,
You guys have some pretty humid weather down there, don't you? I ran once when I was in Lexington, KY, on a business trip. Dripping after 10 feet, couldn't get any oxygen. Horrible.

Ah, yes, the beloved Badwater Ultra. So named because it starts in Badwater, the lowest point in Death Valley and the Western Hemisphere (something like 200 feet below sea level???) Anyway, it goes to the base of mt Whitney. Crazy (I mean more crazy that *just* running through Death Valley in August) people climb the mountain after they finish the race. Appearently, some SEALS entered a few years ago, didn't train for the heat, and got their butts thoroughly kicked. Also, if you use an IV to rehydrate, you're disqualified - probably for good reason. I actually did something similar as I was coming back from the Reno Khonvention this spring - climbed Mt. Whitney (slogging through wet snow with frozen feet is no fun!) and visited Badwater, but made judicious use of a CAR between the two! :D

Here is a link to the official page.

Other crazy feats include the Leadville 100 - a hundred mile race with huge elevation changes in Leadville Colorado, and the Pikes Peak Marathon - 13 miles up Pikes Peak, then back down.

Anyway, good luck with your race Roadrunner!

I'm sure you'll kick ass. More of a sprinter myself. But not very good at that either. Thick legs tire quickly I guess... hehehe

Good luck. :)
