Howdy all!,
Man it's been a while since I posted in here. I mostly have been lurking for the past couple of years due to my job.
I am so stoked about my new purchase I had to share with my fellow Hogs, especially since many of you are gun enthusiasts as well.
This is my first gun purchase, a Springfield Arms GI Milspec 1911. I bought it used from the local gunshop. It came with the case and all the papers inside to include the warranty card unfilled out in addition to two cheap mags, and the original wood "U.S." grips, it came with the Hogue grips in the pic. I don't think the previous owner put more than a couple of mags worth of ammo through it. It was almost pristine inside and out. I got it out the door for $400.00 + tax.
I took it home cleaned it and brought it back to the range yesterday and put 150 rds through it. I worked great except for some FTF with the cheap mags. I really like this pistol. Eventually I am going to send it out to get customized.
Unfortunately I think this is going to be an expensive experience, w/ ammo and all.
Well here's a pic with the obligatory INFI content. I could have picked one of my nicer looking Busses but this one is my favorite user :D

OINK!!!,

Looks good Nick! How is she for accuracy out of the box? Definitely get some good mags, Wilson, Baer, McCormick or something like that.

Accuracy is pretty good I guess. I shot at 10yds/m and I was getting aprox 6" groups. Probably more to do with my not having shot more than 100 rds in the last 15 yrs than anything else. I was shooting about 6" low at 10 yds. I am confident I could hit someone out to 25yds right now at least somewhere on their body :) .

BTW what distance do most folks shoot pistol? Army qualification is man sized E-type targets out to 25m. I think with practice and sights other than the GI sights, which don't show up well against black bullseye targets BTW, I could do a lot better.

Nick!

Sweet gun!!! Congrats HOG!

Say Hi to Kimmy from all of us! :D

Jerry and crew

Nick, sweet piece there bro!!!

15 years, 100 rounds... scares me..

Watch where you point that pup..

Typical distances to shoot pistol are about 15 yards. That is a good practice distance. Most shootouts occur within 7 yards. And of course you already know that if your shooting is marginal at practice it will be horrible when someone is shooting back.

hmmm, Infi Bullets? hard enough to penetrate, but will deform (and continue with more retained mass) rather than fragment? quite a concept...

The next best investment I ever made besides my first 1911 was buying a Dillon progressive pistol press. After you have the brass it costs around $75 per 1000 rounds, and with a dillon, once it's set up you can make about 500 rounds in an hour. It's way more fun to show up to the range not having to worry about how many $15/50 boxes of ammo you've shot already.

Not for nothing, cuz it is fun to trick out your own gun at a custom shop, but some of the manufacturers like Kimber have some pretty sweet custom setups. SA has their Trophy Match which is custom everything (trigger, barrel, sights, etc) for like $900. You could throw $500 into a 1911 and still not be quite up to par with a Kimber Custom CDP ($900) or an SA Trophy. Just a thought.

But nonetheless, congrats. My 1911's are my favorite. I don't know which of my nine I like the most. Have fun out there.

Very cool! I like the Springfield Mil Specs. Is that a single or double stack?

good score..

throw those cheap mags in the trash.. get some Good magazines.
If carrying for self defense.. see what hollowpoints it likes/doesn't like.. some GI-spec 1911's don't like hollowpoints at all.. better to find out at the range.

To improve your groups.. borrow a friend's .44 Mag and go through a full box of ammo. Then try your gun.. instant better groups :)

Enjoy..

I was just thinkin the same thing! LOL

My wife purchased me a 1911-A1 GI mil-spec. ROCK ISAND ARMORY
It only cost $360.00 & tax brand new in the box w/ NOVAC mag.
Look these up while you are on the web see what you think for the money !
Out of the box I put 100 rounds of winchester hardball with no hiccups it shoots great, Ihave not put it on paper but I can hop a popcan at 10-15 yds:thumbup: I would recomend this for any first time 1911 owners !

Nice score Nick, great deal.

.....now you just need to find a set of official Busse snakeskin grips

Congrats on the new 1911 Nick! I have been an avid 1911 shooter since I purchased my first one, a Colt Mk IV Series 70 in 1976.

My choice of magazines is a bit different than what some of the others on this forum have said. I prefer to purchase a handfull of military surplus mags and weed out few that give problems.

Back when you could pick up good US military surplus 45 mags for about 5 bucks apiece I grabbed about a dozen of them and commenced testing. I think I ended up scrapping 4 of them and the rest have served me flawlessly for more than 30 years.

I am sure that the high end mags are great and probably eliminate the need to weed out the bad ones, but where's the fun in that?

To reduce ammo expense, I highly recommend reloading. The .45 ACP is a very easy cartridge to reload and it is a lot of fun to experiment with different loads to find "the one" that your 1911 likes the best. Each gun is an individual and what shoots well in your buddy's gun may not work so well in yours. If you are not already a reloader, give it a try. For me it is almost as enjoyable as shooting.

Enjoy.
