I have this neat little Mike Irie:

but I don't care for the sheath, it has an uncomfortable steel belt clip on the back and doesn't show the knife off as well as it deserves.

Do I REALLY have to have a custom sheath made?

I'll bet there are existing leather sheaths out there that would fit that knife pretty well, or that you could mold to it pretty easily. I would definitely want to show off that handle more. There are about 3000 listed on Fleabay.

First you need to decide if the knife means enough to you and that the cost of the knife justifies a custom made sheath. If it is a true custom or fully hand made knife, then yes, it probably does deserve a custom hand made sheath. If it is a Mid-tech and relatively inexpensive compared to one of Mike's hand made knives then you might pause and think about it. I have made many sheaths which effectively doubled or more, the value/cost of the knife, but in each case the knife meant more to the owner than the extra cost of a sheath that they really liked. In the final analysis, it's up to you.............What do you think of your knife and how unhappy are you with that sheath?

Thanks guys. Fishface, I'll absolutely try to pull one out of the Bay if I see one appropriate.

Blue......you're no help:D but it is still my intention to make it to your Celtic Music Fest one of these years

Mr. Long, it seems we're almost neighbours and after looking at your DVD pics. I believe you've made some stuff for a gunsmith friend of mine - K.Merrington....... I'm at GRC on Junction for a reviving beer most lunchtimes after tennis.

I'll decide what to do about my dilemma pretty soon, but the existing sheath needs to GO!

Mike - Please forgive my tongue-in-cheek comment. However, there was actually some seriousness hidden in that message.
You have a very handsome knife there, made by a very talented maker. It would be a shame to see it housed in an off-the-rack, generic sheath from Texas Knife Supply or the like. You really should consider a custom that will compliment your fine knife. There are any number of extremely talented sheath makers on this forum who would be quite pleased to take on this job.

Understand that if(and when?) you decide to have the job done, the sheath maker will need to have that knife in hand in order to do a proper job. A reputable craftsman will care for your knife like its their own and it will be returned with your new sheath. If you're "almost neighbors" with Paul Long.... well..... there you go. Look no further, he's the best of the best on the planet. You'll be VERY pleased!

As for Celtic Colors Music Festival - please come on up and "fill yer boots". This is an annual exhibition of the finest Celtic musicians from 'round the world. Its a great time. Our door is always open(except when its snowing hard) and we love having guests.

Good luck with your decision.

I understand Peter and I suspect a 'date' with Paul is in my very near future. "Pics." will, of course, follow sometime thereafter. MP

.....oh, and if you could maybe come up with a discarded tissue or piece of used up chewing gum once owned by Natalie McMaster I'd be eternally grateful :o
