I use 2x72 inch belts.

In the 2 inch width, what other sizes are available in the quality belts you use?

2x42
2x48 is common
2x60
2x72 is the most common

Are there any other lengths in use ?

I'm especially interested in the longer than 72" lengths at the finer grits.

and I suppose they don't need to be 2" as I can split them to 1 or 2"

It's the finer grit availability and long length that stumps me.

Ok I added 42 to the list

I'm most interested in the longer lengths at the finer grits.

looking at tru grit, I see a 2x77 and a 2x118. however, I have never seen any machines for those, so you would probably have to do a kmg+++++

Bruce Bump also grinds occasionally with some 132" Blue zirc belts. He once posted a photo of his grinder set up with one of these long belts... looks crazy.

Jamie at Polar Bear Forge shows that he runs 2x90" belts (he alludes to it in his GIB assembly page). Never seen that size anywhere though...

I use 2"x100" belts, i get them locally really cheap (40 grit zirconium belts for 3$ a piece!) I like them for profiling!

Thanks

SO I guess I can assume there is no other longer belt length in common use besides the 2x72" ?

Just one fellow here and there using what they find cheap ?

Two of my grinders will take 72" or 132" belts. I use the 132" because they are less than 72" generally. Ebay is the only source I've used and buy them 25 or 50 at a time. Some are old and have joint tape troubles but usually I come out ahead by far. I have trouble finding finer grits in that size but generally they are good name brand.

My FIL works for Nike golf and I know that they use a longer belt for the machines they use on the custom clubs. I'll ask him what size they are running.

I think the 72" will be the most common you find. I also get alot of my belts on ebay. I have quite a few belts in 80", 90", 76" and 60" length.
What I like about the non standard sizes is there is no competition when attempting to get them on ebay. When using a small wheel attachment I find the 60" work great.
WHen using my flat platten the longer ones are fine for me. I also as Bruce found out find that occasionally the splice will not hold up as well on some i get. But I just put a star on the wall next to those belts
and run the tension looser than normal.
I have found the 132" in belt is quite common though.

I run 90" on all my grinders. I used to have one setup for 132", dismantled that one.

I order my belts from http://www.customabrasives.com/abrasive.asp. They'll make just about any size. I only go to 220 on the grinder, and do the the rest hand sanding.

It started when I got a cheap box of 2x90 norton sg belts. I built my grinders to that and have kept it even after I ran out. I like the way the belts last.
