Other knives as tough at the RYP HEST folder?

The soon-to-be-released HEST folder looks like a great, tough-use knife. I am looking forward to having one in-hand. It got me to thinking... What other knives would be as tough? Knives with thicker-than-standard blades, a solid frame lock (RIL), and premium steel.

Second question... Is there anything out there like the HEST folder for $200 or less?

kind of hard to say without the knife to see in hand, but i would think the higher end tactical folders will be equal to the quality, like strider or the hinderer. cant think of any cheaper than 200 bucks knives that look to be equal, maybe the zero tolerance knives.

i will be curious to see.

How about spyderco military knives? I know alot of other people on this forum carry one. Im very interested to see where this thread goes too and see what other people say.

the spyderco para mils are nice knifes, but the blades are much thiner, i havnt had the manix in hand so i don't know about it. i've got several benchmades and they arn't going to be even close i don't think. ive had good luck with them and they have held up very well but there certainly not as stout as the zero tolerance knives and i think the hest is going to be even more robust.

I have to agree with everything cricketdave has said. The only ones that will compare are at least twice the price and more. ZT knives are good knives but I think the HEST will blow them away. We will have to see once it comes out.

Exactly my thoughts. I think ZT makes some tough knives for a great price, but I think a lot of them use liner locks (last time I checked).

The other knife that came to mind was the Benchmade 755 - which is hampered by the tip-down-only carry.

I'm starting to be convinced that the HEST folder may be the new tough-use knife to beat in the under $200 price range, or even under $300!!

Has any one tested the lock strength on these Titanium frame lock knives? Are they actually any stronger than the extremely inexpensive (relatively speaking) production triad lock knives?

The new ZT 550/551 models seem like they will be comparable and competitive options.

EDIT: I just saw the above post... I have a 2010 Recon and it is definitely a tough knife, just a completely different build. It would be interesting to see how they stack up together.

When the ZT 0551 comes out it and the HEST are going to be neck and neck. The nod might go to the 0551 for steel. The warranties etc will be even.

The question for me is which one will hit the market first. A little bird told me the ZT would be out in early November. Not sure on the date of the HEST release.

Both of the knives will be had at sub 175 prices.

Great Steel, under $200 and a workhorse....

I believe you are refearing to the Gayle Bradley Spyderco!!!
its awesome

CPM-M4 with a great heat treat, holds a edge like nothing else i have, doest stain fast yet still a carbon steel
Solid liner lock
Long enough blade and thicker then the usual spyderco. I have used mine a lot. its my number one right before my RAT 1, believe it or not. For the price i dont think there is a folder out yet that comes close to what a RAT 1 gives me. but its not carbon premium steel. still AUS-8 works well enough for me.

If I was going to be getting a folder(other then the HEST), I would be looking at Cold Steel Tri-Ad lock knives.

i think most of the ZT folders are an inch longer than the HEST. i have two 0200s. they're roughly half the price of the HEST.

none of the HEST/Fs are shipping yet, kinda hard to judge something that nobody in the public has had a chance to handle, and that isn't scheduled to ship for almost three months.

i've got a sterile one on order. trying to wait patiently.

carried a kershaw cyclone(made in usa oct 06) daily for over three yrs now. its proved to be one tough knife. im sorta hard on stuff and ive used it to cut everything. holds an edge n sharpens right up when needed. opens with the same ease and snap it did when new.
looking forward to getting my paws on that hest tho. it just might very well replace the cyclone.

I agree that its a bit tough to say considering the Hest folder won't be out for quite some time. However i do believe that the ZT 300 series is every bit as capable.

How long? Is that confirmed? I'm asking b/c I was considering pre-purchasing one, but I've learned from other recent pre-purchases that my patience isn't what it needs to be to get through some of the longer waits.

I believe they're scheduled for December with many dealers having already sold all their preorders. If you want one, you may want to jump on it while you can.

I've been carrying a ZT 0350 for a while and have really put it through it's paces. Over the years I've had many other folders and none compare to the ZT for quality, strength, and materials used. When the HEST comes out though I really think it's going to take over the number one spot.

I would not consider any knife with a liner lock to be as tough and reliable as a knife with a frame lock. A lock back or triad lock would be fine, IMO.

I would agree but there are a few liner locks that are thicker than some of the frame loks.
