Ok experts, as we know, 5160 steel in the form of good leaf springs from Mercedes, etc. are used today to make good khukuris. What other steels have the kamis used in making khukuris, besides files, rails,....?

In his chapter on preparation for WWII, Farwell says "When the government ran out of kukris the regimental center of the 8th set up its own kukri factory and, using scrap metal and imported artisans, produced quite satisfactory weapons." OTOH, John Powell notes in the FAQ that "Wilkinson made blades for a short time starting in 1951. Apparently they sucked big time and the Gorkhas threw them away." Taken together, it would seem that when it comes to making good khukuris, it's the singer, not the song, that matters.

Well said, Berk. Any idea why the Gorkhas threw away the Wilkinson khuks? Wilkinson, by and large, made quality blades -- perhaps the factory-produced khuks lacked the spirit of those made by kamis?

I suspect they used what every decent steel than can get.

Ploughs, axels, crack shafts, etc.

I wonder what test they can do quickly to see if the steel is worth using.

Steels for Khukuris.....hmmm? I would like to see some made in San Mai form (laminated steel, hard center core and softer outer layers). Also, a blade made of L6 steel. I'll try some of these combinations made when I get my forge set up and running.
