I know the 154 CM is a very good steel over all.
I like cvollecting knoves and also find other steels better is some tasks.

I also like the Emerson knives, but I was wonder if there will be in the future any other steels offer?

I think it will be nice to have different choices.

What is the general oppinion?

Why? Quite honestly I like my Emerson and will buy more partially because of the steel. Why mess with what works, and for that matter, works very well. Its easy to put an edge on, holds it for a good long while, and is just soft enough and on Emersons thick enough to be tough as all hell. What more can a guy ask for in a knife? :)

Agreed.

Most of my favorite folders are in 154CM, no reason to go for something else

there's nothing wrong with 154cm, but there's also nothing wrong with a little variety.

Ernest realizes that 154CM will do the job.
Are there better steels, yes. If I owned a knife company, I would offer different steels.

I think only when another steel has a BIG improvement over current 154CM, will they move on. These BIG improvements come around every decade or so.

i dont think he's gonna use anything but 154 until something really really superior comes out, though i wouldnt mind seeing some other steels too the 154 is pretty good and i have no complaints with it, a little variety would be cool imho but then again i dont have to worry about all the logistics involved in changing things like that so i am biased lol.

anyway he isnt gonna change any time soon imho.

I hghly doubt they will change steels. Its a shame, I think you have to move with the times and I would really like to see some of Crucible's fantastic steels in there. CPM-154 for one would be a great upgrade!

I saw a abuse test with Zero Tolerance knives on Youtube. I mean abuse like cutting steel bolts, pounding with sledge hammers etc.... One thing it showed that the S30V snapped easier than the 154cm when using it as a pry bar.

he probably has a large existing stock of 154 cm from whichever supplier he purchases from.

it would be nice to see a change to cpm154, though.

At the recent Chicago Knife Expo, I spoke with him extensively (read that as about 45 minutes) about his knives and the ever present question about various steels.

He told me he's sticking with 154 until something really, really superior comes out. He doesn't partake in the annual fashion show others call a steel fest, where the bestest, latestest, coolest, hunkiest new steel is drooled over.

Ernest is right-on-the-money.
An A2 knife of mine holds it's edge the longest over of all the other steels I own.

I'm rather fond of A2 as well, I find it to be great on the CRK one piece knives.

As for the EKI steel, as has already been said "if it ain't broke don't fix it". That said I see no harm in doing a "sprint run" or two of knives like the S30V Commanders from time to time.
I like the EKI 154 and it's a steel EKI have got to know very well. I have other 154CM steel knives that are just not in the same boat as the EKIs. I realise it's seen as old hat but its really not that bad a steel.

:)

Lycosa. I got your e-mail, I'm not ignoring it, it's just being mulled over by one or two of us.;)
