Other than axes what else with blades do you like to restore?

Hope this is appropriate for this forum, but I figured we've discussed shovels and scythes before too, so: what other bladed tools do you like to restore?

This scythe was in the garage when we bought our place 24 years ago. Have not done anything to it yet but one day maybe...

Old kitchen knives and old knives in general. If its old and meant to be sharp I am a fan, basically.

Yeah, I'm with you on that. Right now I'm starting to get into restoring old hand saws. Find that the tools back then were made so well and it's exciting to bring something back.

I did this one on Saturday. I have a new handle on order.

I'm also working on a old AF&H garden hoe. I'll grab some photos before I put that one back together.

I restored a couple cleavers that went well, then also some hammers(I know not blades but same church just different pew) and them also done old saws and my latest project is an old mower. See what happens.

Hand planes and chisels. Here is a Union #5 with a BUHL heavy tapered iron (blade).

Nice job on that plane. It's not as easy as it looks to tune them right. Do you have a personal preference in planes? Wood vs metal body? Make?

Thanks, I suppose my preference is my RIDGID 13" planer since it gets the most use:D. But that's not really your question. My overall hand plane usage is still pretty limited. However, I tend to grab my metal body planes more than the wooden body planes. As to make, I haven't found a favorite. I don't own and have never used a so-called "high end" plane.

Thanks, Chris. I built that coal forge a couple years ago. It's all made from scrap. Cost me less than $100. It has served me well though I don't use it nearly as often as I should.

Pegs, have you ever tried forging your own axes? I have been enjoying forging axes more than any other projects lately.

Chris

I haven't yet, Chris. But I have admired your work. It's quite good. Making an axe or two is on my bucket list.

I re-hardened an axe last Saturday. Actually it's in the oven right now as I'm typing this. I'm tempering it back down to a file-able hardness. I'll post pics once I finish the restoration.

You should try. I have some in progress shots I can email you and I would be glad to help however I can. Be careful though forging axes is addictive.

Chris
