Other Users of INFI?

I thought that Busse Combat was making INFI available for other makers to use. If that's true, why do I not hear of other knives using it? Ya gotta think that for the vast majority of production companies out there, INFI is better than what they normally use. If only for their flagship knives!
Am I missing something here?
Is the licencing fee too expensive?
Is the steel itself too expensive?

IIRC the original idea was to release limited amounts of INFI to other makers, but very little (if any at all) made it into the hands of non-Busse shops. I would guess that the legal aspects of the release would have been too complex & convoluted to be cost-effective for Jerry to do. That's just a S.W.A.G. on my part, though.

Personally, I would LOVE to have INFI available to other makers on a general basis. Imagine the awesome potential of designs for a Hossom/Lamey/Fisk/Siska bowie, a Lightfoot/Snody/Blackwood/Bauchop fighter, a Rinaldi/Livesay/Hazen survival blade, or a Mayo/Reeve/Strider folder in INFI. :D  :D

I'd love to see INFI available to ANYONE who could make me my Satin Jack already!

Lenny -

I have thought the same thing - why doesn't Busse Combat Knives permit other makers to use INFI, thereby expand the use and recognition of INFI and make lots of money on licensing INFI.

But in giving it more thought, I think I know what the problem is.
Licensing INFI is the easy part, for the secret of great steel is only
partially in the metallurgy. Of equal importance is how the metal is
heat treated. INFI, as great as it is, would not nearly be as good if the heat treat process was not done correctly. Most makers farm out their heat treating because it is an expensive process not cost
effective unless done in large quantities. So in many cases a third
party becomes involved and quality control is lost.

Jerry and company would have no way to ensure that the heat treat
process was done correctly - hence potentially hurting the reputation of INFI. I think it is a prudent decision to not license the use of INFI, even though I bet Jerry Busse has had many chances to do so.

So, bottom line, for now INFI is ours to enjoy - kind of like our own
special secret !!!

I bet Busse Combat makes a whole lot more just selling great knives made of INFI than they would make licensing it to others.

I do like other knives, but when it comes to edge holding and toughness, none of my other knives can hold a candle to Busses and I kinda like that. It IS like our own special secret... psssst! Don't tell EVERYONE, but INFI rules!

contender - I think you're right. I bet Mr. Busse has had more offers than he can count!
