Hello,
I saw on an interesting knife on an EDC blog and wanted to add to my collection. I found it was the Otter-Messer Anchor knife and my research lead me to a few posts on this site. It was nice to see so many pictures and discussion, so I ordered a knife and it arrived a few days ago. However, I am a little concerned with the appearance of the metal on one side of the tang. I'm not sure if it is just unfinished or if it is damaged in any way. Will this affect the life or performance of the knife? is it a QC or cosmetic issue?

Here is how the tang appears on the opposite side

Can't see your pictures. Did you make those "public" or do we have to be logged into your account to see them?

I think that's more than cosmetic.

Yup, just cosmetic. Otter Messer makes a good user knife but they won't win any awards for fit and finish. That said, that knife should serve you well for years to come so enjoy it!

My Otter-Messer sailor's knife (in bone) has a similar looking tang on the top face. I believe it's normal.

When open, does everything seem to line up and feel solid? Do you notice any up and down wobble? If everything is functioning correctly, I wouldn't worry about it.

It opens with a solid snap, no wobble. There's a slight gap on the back, but overall it sounds like its nothing to be concerned about.

Thanks for everyone's input. This is the first knife I've purchased without handling it first.
Glad I joined, I don't feel so silly always wanting another knife.

Welcome to the club :)
BTT: I would say this is mainly cosmetic and like lambertina I have seen similar tangs on slipjoints from various makers.
