I was in walmart getting some waterproof match canisters which were $1 each when I stumbbled upon this soup container from Sterilite. It does the samething as an Otterbox but for a fraction of the price. Watertight and See through. For $3 you cant go wrong. Oh yeah they had about 4 diffrent sizes. Hope this was helpful.

6 inches long
4 inches wide
2.5 inches high

Take a look :

Looks lighter weight too. I had an otter box, it leaked on the first outing costing me $100 in soaked electronics. The lid was warped. Basically junk.

I haven't used the Sterilite version of those, but the Lock n Locks are excellent. I've used them instead of Pelican cases for years when I want to protect something from dings and water but don't want the weight penalty.

It looks like that would be good for a small FAK. It beats the ziplock bag I use now.

They have 1 size smaller and 2 more bgger ones. The first thing i did was fill it with water to see if it worked. And it did.

I have a half dozen otterboxes, never have had a leak or a problem, except trying to open them after a high altitude trip.

And that would be my question on the sterilite. pop it into the sun for an hour, or the dehydrator at 135, and then into the freezer. will it open? if so, I'd be cautious- I'd use it, but I'd be cautious.

wouldn't trust my 400 dollar camera to it on a river trip, that's for sure. Batteries in a survival kit, hell yeah. I just zip everything in a goretex map pouch anyway... built right into my pack.

I saw those at The Dollar Store recently. My gal said we already had "too much tuperware" and veto'd it. I'm going back for some.

I have the smaller of the two that were sold at my walmart, and it's still pretty big. It's solid and has a pretty thick gasket.

Who makes that one?? You got it at WalMart???

blake

Outdoor products. I believe that is Walmart's brand. You might be surprised by the stuff they have in thier little outdoor section -- water purification, emergency blankets, emergency candles and so on.

this is how i see it, if you are going to use it for simple camping trips, hikes (not way up in the hills or swimming rivers) this would be ideal for the ED use of the above. good find

I'm a big fan of Walmart Woodsbumming. Their dry bags are outstanding. If you're looking to try a hydration bladder, they sell an inexpensive day pack with one for under $15.

I have one of those $15 Outdoor Products Hydration Bladders and it's been working great for me for over a year now.

BTW Those are some neat looking containers, Will have to check them out. Thanks for sharing them with us. :)

I bought one of those Sterilite containers just two weeks ago to use for a canoeing ditch kit. I do not trust it as is, though. When I finally decide what's actually going to be in it, I plan to run duct tape around it to hold those latches down.

I use those sterilite containers in my EDC FAK and PSK right now, and yes, while they provide a higher internal volume / external dimensions ratio at a lighter weight, I do not trust them as much as my Pelican and Otterbox cases. The latches on the one that holds my FAK is way too loose and comes undone easily. And while the seal stood up to filling with water and shaking it around a few times...I don't know how well it'd hold up over the long run or in a really bumpy situation.

I use Pelican and Otterbox cases in my hiking pack, and will replace the containers in my EDC pack when I can afford to buy a couple more.

I've been using Oso Fresh boxes (wife got them at Target) for stuff like this. The boxes are sturdier than the Sterilite and the latches are friggin' bulletproof.

(I've got a couple big ones that I "borrowed" from the kitchen doing duty as humidors. Truly multi-purpose. :))
