For the first time in my life since my infatuation with blades began I have sharpened a knife to a edge that I am a bit afraid of. Using a lansky guided edge device I sharpened it shave sharp then while stropping it my finger got a bit to close. Didn't even feel the cut.

welcome to a sharp knife  it happens. i tend to get bit once/twice a week or so, i sharpen and maintain a pile of knives for quite a few people though.. so maybe you wont get bitten as often.

I have nicked myself a few times. Worse one was when I was closing a knife with one hand. Used my thump to push the liner lock out of the way but didn't get my thumb outta the way. The blade I had sharpened the day before to my 8000 grit norton waterstone and stropped. Took a big chunk outta my thumb. Didn't know I had done it until I saw my hand covered in blood.

I was at a point where I couldn't figure out the sharpening my own knife trick. So I would buy a new cheap knife to keep from having a dull blade. Now that I think I have the lansky technique figured out I may be purchasing a few more expensive varieties now

You'll probably be spoiled. You'll notice when the knife isn't quite as sharp, by the smallest amount. That's how the addiction starts... .

lol I cut about 15-20 boxes with it today and it was noticeable to me that it didn't have that snappy quick cut anymore but I am gonna try and restrain myself from sharpening it every night

Sharp is when you don't notice a cut until you see the blood. Congratulations and welcome to the club!

Would never have been possible without the info provided on this forum thanks to all the great teachers

If you are pretty satisfied with your sharpening results, that most likely means you are not obsessed with sharpening yet. It is when your knives are already tree topping and hair splitting but you still dont feel they are sharp enough.

How sharp will be truly sharp? To me, it is when you are cutting with your knives but you do not feel you are cutting anything.
