Had a little screw up today. This week my buffer, a set of those cardboard knife sharpening wheels, and other odds and ends arrived. So this afternoon I set things up and gave it a test drive. Junker knife I keep in the shop was the first victim, not too bad so next up my used and abused stockman, alright getting a grip on this so I raid the kitchen for a paring knife and the learning cure isn't too bad. I decide to have a go at the blem M-43 that I picked up this summer. I improved the edge some and managed to keep all my appendages attached although I don't recommend the wheels for such a large curvy blade. I have the 8 inch wheels and there isn't enough working room. I kept running in to the body of the buffer or having to move up higher on the wheel than I really liked, but the wheels I only intended for quick touchups and to get me by until I get my 2 x 72 machine put together. Now for the screw up, too put things to a test I grabbed a half full one liter water bottle and an aprox 6 inch long scrap of 2x4. The water bottle was first up and was fairly impressively cut in two. Then the 2x4, the first cut split it nicely so I decided to have another go, this time it also split easily but one half came back and hit me square in the forehead. One cut about a half inch long and another beside it about a quarter inch long an inch below the hair line. Most of the damage is to my pride but it?s a reminder that it's not just the blade you have to watch but also how what you are cutting may react.
