Ok, here's my warning to you makers out there....tell folks to not interupt you while on that blood seeking buffer. I had an unexpected guy walk up and grab my arm from behind while buffing a blade...I got nailed good. He also got told a thing or two about doing that to someone using a power tool...I took a good swipe across the palm requiring stitches. Fortunately, I didn't sever anything serious and have total feeling....here's the picture (a little graphic).

Post your shop with signs, or whatever but make sure your visitors know well enough to not disturb you while working your equipment. Twenty five years of blacksmithing and knifemaking and this was the first "bad one" and I don't want anymore!!! There's nothing that wants to hurt you more than a buffer...remember that fellas....it'll end your life quicker than anything, and above all wear your Personal Protection Gear in your shop.

What the hell kind of idiot grabs someone running a power tool except to save them from some sort of unexpected danger? I'm sorry if he's someone you care about but he's a freaking idiot and would be requiring a whole lot more medical care than some stitches after I finished my PTSD fueled freakout. Everyone that comes in my shop knows not to talk to me until I step away from a tool. If they're waiting they can edge their way into my view but NOONE startles me.

Sorry for your stitches but I think an A## whoopin is in order if that person is an adult.

HA HA HA!! I think he thought there was one coming too but, I was too busy running around squirting blood to put one in his snot locker. Bad thing was it was just a kid doing fill in work for the UPS during the Christmas run...and...he was delivering some needed knifemaking steel also...sooo....what do ya do....?

I put a door dingy in now....I suppose that'll startle the crap out of me and I'll be stitching the other hand...(grin)

I always lock the screen door on my shop (garage) when I'm working so no one can "sneak up" on me, even unintentionally.
I really should make up a sign to post on the door also - something like, "For safety, please wait until machines stop running before knocking or calling." Years ago, before she knew better, my wife called to me through the screen while I was holding a blade to the grinder. Not a disaster - I was able to fix the grind - but it could have been.

My wife has gotten REALLY good at whistling to me from the door and NEVER surprises me in the garage.

so far she's the only one I've ever had to worry about.

Wolfjohn, sorry about the stitches. My count over my life is just short of 500. I got 300 in one sitting (car wreck) I'm the stitch king in my family.

Will,

I have a raging case of PTSD, it's a bummer.:grumpy:

Greg, fully understand, at times it's worse than a bummer and you know what one of those freakouts is like. :(

Ya know I try to look at it in a different light. One day at the VA a bunch of the guys (Nam through current day vets) were all b@$#@ and griping because of how long it was taking, I mean we were at least 2 hours past our appointments. Old lady is pushing a man (obviously her husband) in a wheelchair, someone commented on how lucky he was to have someone to care for him like that. "I've had to help him a lot since he returned from Bataan." We got pretty quiet after that.

I had a freakout back in 9-08. My (now ex) GF and her mom accused me of being on crystal meth because my pupils were blown. I went to the emergency room at the VA that night b/c I thought I had finally lost my marbles. The shrink said pupil dilation is part of the adrenalin dump caused by a flashback. Had a drug test done to prove it but she still doesn't quite believe me. The worst thing about PTSD is that you can't truly explain it to somebody who hasn't been there.

I now have a couple of framed pics strategically placed to cover holes I punched in my walls. That incident started a drinking spree that ended in my first DUI and my present sobriety date. Accusing me of being on a drug that I have worked soooo hard to kick over the years is like saying that my dad f***ed goats for a living. That's fighting words.

I'm sorry about your hand, WolfJohn. Thank **** it wasn't any worse.

I don't get it though... even my 9-yr-old knows better than to do that. I don't like people grabbing at me anyway, but geez...

*gets some crayons to make a sign*

Hey Will and Charley,

PTSD, sorry you have it. Lots of people think its a joke, I joke about it all the time.
I dont know anyone that has it so I was surprised when I saw it mentioned.
I have been in the hospital more than once over it.
Will, not many of those old guys left, my grandfather was in Africa for the big one. We lost him last Feb.

Wolfjohn, Sorry we hijacked your thread

Not a problem at all...I admire ALL you that have done military time- God Bless all of you.
My Pop was in WWII, fought in Guam...said he sat in a fox hole for three days with water up to his nuts....you gotta hand it those guys...tough birds. He doesn't talk much about it, that's ok....I know he's fought off a lot demons from that time too but, at the age of 84, he's still kicking them back....his key to life?...He said, "I eat what I want- when I want, drink a shot of whiskey before bed each night and I don't move unless I goddamn have to...!"
Kinda shoots the health nut version all to hell, huh?

Now thats why I'm afraid of buffers. I dont use mine except for a few seconds on ivory and stag final polish. I dont like the sight of my own blood.

Hey Bruce...it's John Williams from Richland...I still want to get down to W/W and yak it up with you....been really busy....healing....HA HA HA!!

Hey John you should have come down before this happened. I could have told you to stay off the buffer.:D

Well, Bruce, you know, its just sad what a guy will do to get out of doing the dishes after the kids move away from home....

"Alright Buster...If you can't take the heat...go stand in front of your buffer...."

What the....?????
