We lost a good friend this past week. I don't know how many of you knew him but those who did will be the better for having known him.
I've requested that this memorial be posted in the Knifemakers Guild Newsletter:

We mourn the passing of our dear friend Dr. John Anthony of England who left us on 15 June. John was a medical doctor of renown in the British Health Service and had been a director at the highest levels, in addition to having his own practice.
He was a champion shooter, having competed in the Olympics on the British team and loved fine firearms, but he especially treasured fine, hand crafted knives.
John was an avid knife collector for many years and had acquired a substantial collection from well known knifemakers. Perhaps of greater significance, he also supported the new, emerging craftsmen not only by purchasing their knives, but also by encouraging and guiding many along their journey. He introduced novice collectors to the art and was active in club meets and knife shows around the globe.
He treasured his collection of knives and lovingly handled and cared for them in his little cubbyhole off his bedroom which he called his “showroom”. It was adorned with mementos of a long and honorable life and ,of course, with cabinets filled with hand made knives of every value and description.
He was always a source of jolly good humor and delighted in telling stories and tales which never failed to captivate and enchant us. It seems that, no matter what the subject under discussion, John had a story to accompany it, usually with a very funny punch line attached. In telling a joke, his timing was impeccable. Which, of course, John would consider one of his greatest attributes. We who loved him, however, would consider his deep loyalty and loving friendship to be his true legacy to us.
John’s positive outlook and joy of life never wavered, even during the course of a long, cruel illness. His messages to us always glowed with enthusiasm even when the news was forboding and he always seemed to have plans and thoughts of the future.
Our lives and spirits are enriched for having known John Anthony whose friendship has given us more than we can ever re-pay. May we learn and benefit from his joy and strength. He will be sorely missed.

My condolences to his friends and family. I only met John once, but your description of him matched my one experience.

I first met John Anthony at the London Arms Fair in 1984. I was selling Chris Reeve knives and he bought a MKIV from me.
His warmth and passion for knives was immediate from the outset.
It was he who first showed me knives from Ron Lake, Jess Horn, Bob Loveless and George Herron.
I was hooked.
In the years that followed I always tried to see him when I was in London but alas life catches up with us and I had not seen him for some years when Howard Hitchmough mailed me last week to tell me of his passing.
He was a man who loved his hobby's and interests and there was always a new sports car, gun or knife every time I visited him.
I will cherish the memories of the evenings with him, Howard Hitchmough and Simon Lytton in his house in Southend. My deepest condolences go to Sheelagh and his children.

Steven
