Cris Hatfield recently snapped this shot from the ISS. It shows the northern/eastern 2/3rds of Cape Breton Island surrounded by ice flow. You are looking mostly at the famous Cape Breton Highlands which is actually the northern end of the Appalachian Mountain chain. The cove at the bottom of the photo with the two open patches of water is Ingonish harbour. I live about two hours drive south of that harbour.

Now, to get onto our wonderful island you need to cross over the Canso Causeway from mainland Nova Scotia to the southern tip of Cape Breton. Occasionally, as in two days ago during our most recent snow storm, the Canso Causeway becomes impassable. This semi truck was blown off the road in 94mph winds whipping through the Canso Straight, closing the causeway for about five hours.
