Our latest creation in the knife department

I don't think it looks much like a sharpfinger, but it does look like a nice utility/skinner. Nice work, though 3/16" sounds awfully thick for such a small blade. What was the thinking behind that?

To add some strength in the utility department. It has a deep hollow grind so cutting efficiency is still up there.

There seems a lot going for this design. Not convinced that the stock needs to be quite so thick, but then I like thin tapered blades. I would agree this blade should to be stiff though.

What ruins it for me is the lower tine. I wish it was another couple of mm longer, so that it was virtually imposible to ride over it but not too long to get in the way. For those times when you have lost your hand in gue and hit something hard. I also like the tine to be a rope/cord stop so that the cord cannot run off the blade as can happen with some of that hard nylon stuff. This works for sinues.

I also wouldn't have the filework so deep as I like this to be flat so that I can put down palm pressure for chissel cuts. Something, yes, but not so deep.

The ergonomical handle looks great.

PS: my wife calls me a Rat :)

Looks like a winner, Jeff. It reminds me of one of my favorite (as well as my oldest) knives, a Schrade-Walden skinner. The S-W has a 3.5 inch handle, but the pommel is an aluminum "birdshead" sort of thing that sweeps back, so it allows your pinkie a little more room than you would get from a straight handle that short; the blade is 4.5 inches long, and probably only about 1/16 inch thick, most likely 1095. It also has a dished out area just ahead of the grip, so the thumb has a perfect place to ride when putting a lot of downward pressure on the knife.

With the larger handle of the RAT, it would be super easy to control, and the edge is long enough to do some good work. And the choil, in conjunction with the file work, will allow you to choke up on the blade real easy for even better control. Piggybacked to a larger knife, this would be a perfect companion blade. What kind of sheath are you looking at, and have you fixed a price yet?

The knife was designed to cut all the way to the bottom when held with a full grip. Most knives won't do this since the guard will get in the way.

JeffRandall, its difficult to comment on a knife when you haven't held it in the hand. Your point is well noted and I do agree that this design point has its merrits. The large French Kitchen knives do this well. What I find confusing is the thickness of the blade with the deep spine filework. This indicated to me a stout field knife where I would prefer the longer tine. Stoughter knives tend to be used for jobs needing a little more brute force.

If the blade was finer to cut deeply with palm aid for chissel cutting capability then I would agree with you completely. Vegetable preparation would be easy as you could rock the blade through the material.

I'm just not sure which way this knife wants to go. Thick utility or thin shinner.
I have a custom Canadian design similar. This knife should work as the ergonomics are right, but it doesn't because its just too thick.

Does the filework on the spine need to be as deep?

Jeff,

Deer season begins here Monday. I'd be happy to field test one of those babies for y'all ;) Buck tag and two doe tags ... if I'm lucky I might even be able to get it dull.

Maybe we need to send this cross-dresser to a psychiatrist or at least the Jerry Springer show, no? :)

Jeff

Here in Massachusetts, we happen to have a psychiatrist who is a cross-dresser. Of course, he's on trial for murder, so he's a little preoccupied at this time.

Mike,
Your the only one I know who actually GOT two - Bummer. I'll be in the woods with my buck and doe tags

I've been a bit thick! 3/16 inch is not as bad as I had in my minds eye. For some reason I had 1/4 plus!! though I had looked at the stats several times. With the grind, probably just right. Wooops. So apologies all round for that one.

Now that I've got that sorted the design works much better. Could we have a profile shot from above?

Jerry Springer:"Well Rat, you've come here today because you think everyone sees you as fat, you don't look fat to me".
Rat: "No! I just want to cut, cut, cut; What's wrong with that I'm a knife aren't I. I'm only here for the $1000 appearance fee, and this is the fith talk show I've been paid for." :)
