Ok, well maybe we'll postpone guard dog duty for a few months ;)

Thank you to everyone who gave advice on what type of dog to get for our family. As you can see, we settled on a German Shepherd. Her name is Sasha, and she's already smarter than our previous dog was when fully grown. I think she'll be a fine addition to our family!

Good choice.

I used to have a pure bred German Shepherd when I was living in Germany. Great dog. Protective, loving, and smart.
Just the long hair was annoying, but it's OK you'll get used to it.

Noticed she has a pronounced 'smart bump' & I believe the old wives tale about those. We've had dogs for most of my years & it seems to me that the flatter the head, the lower the learning capacity . When a dog looks to you to show it how to please, you've got a winner. Tough love to start to imbed the no-nos & after they are absorbed & obeyed you may slack off.
Remember ,dogs aren't human but they are better companions than some folks.

We just lost our 15-year-old German Shepherd, Casey. A real princess...

Now the very energetic labby (1year old) has no one to play with, and I think we may go looking for a buddy for him. Maybe one of the many rescued pups.

How can you possibly let that ferocious, slavering beast walk around unrestrained? :D

good choice.

I agree that German Shepherds make great watchdogs and family dogs too, as long as she is an "inside dog" (is she, I hope?) and especially if you get her as a young puppy like that. She's very cute and I bet she'll grow up to be beautiful!

I never heard that about the "smart bump" thing, but my dog, beneath the topknot (hair pouff) has a very pronounced point at the back of her head. I've since felt for and noticed this in other Standard Poodles I have encountered. Therefore, I must conclude that the old wives' tale must be true! ;)

And, yes, they aren't human, but I am a happier person when I spend the majority of my time with my dog and the minority with people! I think there are a lot of "dog people" on this site that will agree. :)

I feel the same way (animals vs. people) about horses and cats, in different ways. Horses are companionship, entertainment, exercise, trust and discipline all in rolled up in one. Dogs are companionship, loyalty, trust, and a true best friend/child all in one. Cats are a cozy snuggle-pal who occasionally flips out over nothing and can be either entertaining, annoying, or both (mine are both!)

Mark, try to remember to take a new pic every month or so, so you can see her growing up. You will be glad you did, and it would also be cool to see her progress. I didn't do it as often with my dog, but I wish I had. I have a lot of baby shots, a few older puppy shots, and a bunch of grown up shots.

Thanks for the kind words, everyone.

P.S. Yes, Ashes, she is an inside dog.

I'll cast my vote for dogs over humans. When it comes to caring for offspring, I could easily pick some moments when a human has acted with less brains than dogs generally do. So while the average dog might not be smarter than the average human, there are some specific dogs out there which would rank above some specific humans. It's not fair to say humans are smarter outright.

As for personality, which "goes a long way," I would need some pretty extensive research to prove that dogs don't have us beat on that.

Great looking puppy!!! Looks like a winner......Remember to be patient with her, they respond to you better if you use positive types of training...I have a Bullmastiff who loves for me to whisper to her, it doesn't matter what I say she just likes the attention...she's not spoiled at all!!! 125 lb. lap dog.

What a Beauty!!

Java looked like that as a pup until the highlights filled in......

She got all slicked up and wants to know if Sasha can come ou and play....

Please, please, please.......:D

Congratulations on your beautiful new companion. Hopefully, you will be worthy of the love and loyalty that she give you :)

"He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog.
You are his life, his love, his leader.
He will be yours, faithful and true.
To the last beat of his heart.
You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion."
