This is a unique forum.I see self described skinheads with tatoos and body piercings on other forums. They wonder why the cops hassel them.Duh? My Dad and uncles thought that they had delt with National Socialism and its kin.We must be ever vigiliant.I never would have believed the 1968 Gun Act.This is not the America that I bled for and left body parts on foriegn soil for.

Ghostsix, when I compare the US of today to the US I knew during WWII it is like viewing night and day.

I most certainly agree our country isn't the same. Sadly it may not ever be like it was before. I remember the freedoms I had as a young boy and even as a teen. We carried our rifles and shotguns through neighborhoods to the fields an woods. No-one ever stopped us and asked what we were doing, going,if the guns were loaded.
How come we had such big knives etc.
No-one freaked out when we went back through the neighborhood with dead rabbits and/or squirrels and/or game birds.

I remember meeting up with a family that was traveling across country about 1945. The man and his wife and two kids were driving a Ford 60 V8 and pulling a house trailer. We were in a big 1940 Buick Limited. We traveled with Them for several days, shared meals, good times and hard if a vehicle broke down. The old man pushed the litte Ford 60 and the housetrailer over one of the passes in the Rockies. The man couldn't hardly believe that old Buick had that much power. It is a much longer story than that, but it used to be where there were no strangers and people would help one another out. Kids could play with one another wthout the thought of killing someone.

I remember helping out (with some other kids sometimes) those older people that couldn't help themselves. Mowing lawns and cutting weeds etc. for nothing more than a glass of water and the most beautiful eyes in the world giving you thanks. Some people will never know what that feels like.
The words "It is better to gve than to receive" meant something back then. I wonder sometimes if they still do and then realize that ... Yes. at least among most of the people I know, even most of the younger ones. Perhaps, just perhaps there is enough nucleus that maybe I am wrong and things can get back to some semblance of sanity.

Thanks for listening.

Yvsa, I have travelled a lot my entire life and some of my travels involved "roughing it" with tent, sleeping bag, Coleman stove, etc.

50 years ago when I was young I could leave my camp for days, come back and everything was just as I left it. 10 years ago I left my camp for a couple of days, came back and there was nothing there.

It is a sign of changing times and values.

A year or so I saw a young couple with toddler 8 or 10 miles out broke down by the side of the road, and continued into town, to inform the Sheriff's office. Had my kid with me at the time. Deputy looked at me as I apologetically explained I hadn't stopped to help, nodded understandingly, sharing anger and pain that I'd done the smart thing nowadays instead of what I believed in.

That is one of the nice things about participating in the Rendevous. People there are different than your run of the mill person. People have thousands of dollars in tentage, guns, knives, etc lying around in their camps and we think nothing of leaving all of it out in the open for the day, even with noone around. Theft just isn't an issue. (except on visitors day when the camp is open to the public) You can let your children go off and play with the other kids all day long and not have to worry about them. If you need anything at all ther are plenty of people who will share or give you what you need to get by. It is a different world there, one which I would trade in a heartbeat for the world we have now. Being an LEO there is tremendous pressure to conform to the current politically correct movement of socalism. I rail against it every day and will tell anyone who will listen what is wrong with our current society. Needless to say if I ever achieve any rank it will be a miracle.

Mike

Mike, if you are going to make Chief I think you will have to wear two hats -- one LEO and one politician.

Uncle Bill

People still help people here.I wear a gun so,take no risk, but a lady gave me a ride home last year when I threw a fan belt. When I was in ID I had a hard time jogging because every PU would stop and offer me a ride.

Uncle Bill,

I haven't an ounce of politician in my being!!

The attitudes in the western and southern states are much different than they are here in the east. I have a considerable amount of family in Arkansas and I lived in Missoula, MT for the better part of a year. People in the east are generally more uptight and not as nice. Sad but true. Perhaps if everyone had an HI khurkri they would learn to relax!

Mike

Work on it.A buddy of mine was the senior Patrolman with the CHP at one time.He had a Masters, just didn`t want to be Admin.A very cool guy,a good hand with a gun.I do not say that lightly. No influence. Of course,he is not as good as I am.

Mike, if you just do the job, protect and serve, you have done more than most of us and take pride in that.

Ghost, the reason you shoot well is because you have learned -- practice, practice, practice....

Uncle Bill

I`ve lived with weapons so long that now they are an extention of my will. The pistols and the revolvers. They require no thought.
