Our very best axe

I have bean looking or the perfect axe to give to my uncle as a gift. Unfortunately he has bad shoulders and can't swing an axe so this will be a display piece. With that in mind I wanted to find an axe that had an interesting and hopefully large logo. Most of the axes with large logos sell on eBay for over 100 dollars sometimes even up to 300. After several months of searching eBay I came across this Hibbard, Spencer, Bartlett & Co. our very best axe that has a large logo with nice crisp stamping. I fell in love with it and ended up paying more than I had originally planed. I picked it up for 68$ including shipping. I would really like to be able to provide some information on this axe when I give it to my uncle. If anyone has any information concerning the H.S.B and Co. company or the their OVB line of axes such as how high quality they are, how old it might be, or how well they were received in the logging community it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for the help.

Hibbard Spencer & Bartlett Sold out to John Cotter Co. For the Tru Value brand. The deal was final in 1963, so your uncle's axe was made prior to 1963. It is a high quality tool. No way to know for sure who the manufacturer was. Here's a link for the HSB company history.

Plumb used a variety of markings on axes, for what true reasons we may never know. They included stars, crescent moons, hearts, boots, horsehoes, etc. I have seen that marking above on Plumb axes - I am pretty darn sure. I am not 100% positive at this time. I will see if I can find one of mine with that stamping, but I have all mine toted up until the axe shop gets remodeled to take over the world.

I am pretty sure you are correct Operator.
It just so happens that I have a Plumb Champion with that mark on it. It is also close to 6lbs. Just a coincidence, I guess.

Here you go. Its interesting that I always assumed that was a weight stamp. Its good to know that is not the case. I did not hang it and have been meaning to re haft it more to my liking. I think it is around 6 1/2lbs with the haft.
