As we've had so much rain I figured I'd try the Cedar bark with a ferro-rod again, I've never had much luck with it unless I mix it with some resin but ya never know......Fluffed to perfection......

Yeah same result as usual, tiny flame and lots of smouldering.....pretty much sucks this time of year...YMMV !

I am glad you and your dogs were given reprieve from all the rain, It has been crappy around here and today it was quite beautiful, as well. I love the knife pic with the ice in the background. Thanks for posting your outing, I always enjoy seeing them.

NPAUPD (nice pictures as usual, pitdog :D )

I don't know what your Cedar is like on the left coast, but the Northern White Cedar (Thuja occidentalis) around here is very much like that. It will blow up from an ember easily, but doesn't maintain a good flame, so it must be optimized with something like Birch bark, etc.

Yeah that sounds about the same as here Doc, at one point I picked up the bundle and tried to blow it into flame, got lots of smoke but still nothing more than glowing embers !

Cool pictures pit. The embers is it though...Okay, next time grab a stick and take that big honking knife and make some shavings with it. Now spark that cedar and blow it into a bit glowing ember. Throw those shavings on top and blow it into a nice little fire. There you will have it! Think of that cedar ball as a big coal extender rather than a tinder.

I hear what ya saying Ken and in the summer time I have got decent results with the Cedar but I'm quite sure it wouldn't have blown hot enough to ignite shavings today. I will give it a try and report back though !

I can't believe that you got sun up there. Down here we've had nothing but clouds and rain the last few days, and snow today. As far as the ceder bark goes I always carry a little bit fluffed and dry in the back of my strike force. Maybe you could give that a try, just keep a bit in a dry container and use that to start with and build from it. I get it to start up every time.

Pics look awesome BTW.

Fatwood! everything is SO wet here, that Fatwood is our Holy Grail.

so much so that a local fatwood drug war has erupted between the Policizia and the area woodsmen
