Today was another of those plain nasty wet PNW days, today however my incentive to get my ass out was that I wanted to try Doc-Canada's Nail trigger trap !

Did I mention today was wet !!!!

Skunk cabbage as far as the eye can see !

For anyone wondering how big the leaves are on these things......they are pretty big !

The Salmonberry are starting to appear ~

So onto the Nail trigger trap, I first tried doing this using Docs idea of a bowline on a bight but this didn't work well for me. I also slightly modified my version by putting a small step in the end of the trigger stick to hold both my snare side loops securely right on the end of the stick, this can't really be seen in the pic.

I had my noose hanging down under a fallen log ~

Now Doc always catches those Pierre or Justin rats which we don't have on the Island. What we do have though are miniature stunt monkeys, these live for excitement and can't resist checking traps and stuff out......heck you don't even need bait !

As the stunt monkey pulled on the noose it quickly lifted him into the air, Maisy was quite confused by all the action !

I really like this trap but it does take some adjusting to get it right. I'm also not entirely sure what benefit this has over a basic twitch-up snare.

I found quite a few White Coral fungi which I understand are edible, do your own research before chowing down though, don't just take my word for it !

Even on a day as wet as this you can still find dry tinder, check out this tinder fungus on the floor, it had been kept dry by the cover of the tree ~

3 strikes of my ferro-rod and it was lit !

It still smouldered happily as it sat in this puddle being soaked by rain !

Cool stuff Pit. I've yet to find tinder fungus while out and about. One of these days. :D

Thanks for sharing the pics. I really like to learn more about traps, and any kind of tweaks people make on them.

Yo Pit, looks like cabin fever to me.

Just sayin'.

Maybe time to take the Mrs. to town for a few days.

Hey pitdog, glad I got you wet. However, the angle of your loops is all wrong. Consider (from the It Might Be A Trap Thread)

Compare this to yours:

Once you get it set up, the sensitivity will blow you away. No 'steps' are needed at the end of the 'nail'. The loop can be set right at the end. Also note that in the above examples I didn't use a Bowline In A Bight.

Advantages over a twitch up? Versatility & sensitivity.

Hmm....I'll have to try it again using the different angle. It was quite sensitive on the one I made, even moving the snare had to be done with caution !

It looks like a dairy farm yard under foot that greeny brown water.

Thansk for the scakle pic of those Skunk Cabbage leaves....I had no idea they were so gigantic!

Hey Pit, even the Mrs. will like that.

Heh heh.

the coral fungus I have eaten have all been really choice. some of the korean folks I used to train with pickled them
