so today dtrap, pops, and myself headed over to our good friend dave's house today. we went on a little walk about out in the woods to beat on some serious steel and see what our blades could hold up too. we did a lot of stuff that we shouldn't have with our knives and hawks but hey you need to know what they can take right :) we did a lot of chopping, a lot of throwing, some fire starting and even some BACON eating. we had a ton of busse's, swamp rats, siegles, JK hawks, coal creek forge hawks, ect ect ect. we had to many knives lol. on to the pics as they speak for themselves.

all of the blades.... well most of them anywho

my new coal creek forge hawk. it's a beast but I did happen to break the handle. it's a amazing tool and I should have known better than to throw my toma-axe with this handle, but I'm dumb and did it.

Thanks for having the courage to post a picture of your broken handle. It's a good reminder of why grain alignment is important. You can see that the grain orientation in that handle is exactly wrong. You're not dumb for breaking it. The manufacturer is negligent for sending you one like that.

Love all the pics!

I don't know a ton about this...but...I'm pretty sure you're off base there. If I'm not mistaken, that is curly maple. Not sure grain alignment is that important/that predictable on curly. I think grunt had it right, he decided to throw it when he knew he shouldn't. I've done that kind of thing tons of times. "This might be a bad idea....yep, sure was." Even if it had been hickory with "perfect" grain alignment, you still have to expect some breaks when your throwing hawks. It's hard on them.

Anyway, the grain alignment thing seems a little out of control to me. The last handle I broke was NOT user error, just chopping, and it had perfect alignment. I have a couple of axes that have exactly opposite of "perfect" that have held up fine. It's probably better to have the alignment spot on, but I think through running grain is more important. My two pennies worth.

Also, grunt, that is a ridiculous amount of high end steel! I'm still an axe guy, but the Siegle is amazing!

Maybe you're right. As long as it's sold as a mantle piece and not a user then any ol' hunk of wood will do for a handle.

Nice pics...Straight grain is always best for throwing..Any curly handle is weak across the grain when it comes to throwing..Just the nature of the beast..Order yourself a good $4 straight grain hickory handle and you'll be good to go.

thanks everyone. and stephen sent me a hickory handle but it wasn't finished up. still needed to be sanded to fit right. I was in the process of doing it but I can only get out and play so much. I took the chance using it and ended up paying the price of the broken handle. I have since sanded down the hickory handle now and it's working like a champ again just not as pretty :) I'm going to either stain or torch it this weekend to make it a bit better looking. I might send it back to CCF and have him make me a new handle.

also not all the blades are mine there was 4 of us out there and between us we did have some monsters :)
