River-8 and I got out in the sticks for a little while this past weekend. The whole outing was "mostly harmless" as 8 likes to say, but I did get to use my new HHFSH for the very first time. We had our try at firestarting...first, River-8's attempt. What a pro, he got it on the first try  That's his safe queen off to the right of the fire.

Now my try...took me a while to get it going but it came in time.

We also tried out a cheap Wal-Mart firestarter. It's supposed to be used to light fireplaces so it can't be lit with a metal match, but it sure does have a long burn time...about 5 minutes! We felt a little awkward lighting the firestarter after we got the fire going...

And of course, the gratuitous knife shot...

Got to love the HHFSH! Nice pictures, made me want to start a fire.

Yeah, but; We almost DIED  !!

Goin' again this Sunday, Noonish...
The next Sunday (2/22) will be a no-go for me.

Cheers,
8

I didn't want to mention that John...the whole ordeal was a little traumatic for me :D. This Sunday sounds good!

Nice pics, looks like a ball.

Nice to see snow too (75 degrees here today!)

Ok, I thought so, just thought that since it was such a simple answer I must have been wrong. Thanks brother

River 8, what is the purpose of the small red rag hanging off the back of your knives?

Rescue Mike is correct, for instance tree often move out of the way when I toss my Safe Queen their way :o ...

But, Dude; that's NOT red - that's Tactical Pink :D !!

So Mike; Sunday?
24 Hour SAR Pack Test next weekend  ...

Cheers,
8

We made some fatwood shavings and then used a fire steel. We lit the firestarter we tested after we started the fire...kind of a backwards occurrence.

How did you guys start the fire?

Metal Match; spark-based firecraft - MUCH easier than friction-based fire...
You can see mine just to the left of my Safe Queen (with the tactical pink para-cord).
Scrape a few sparks off, and you're good-to-go!

:D

Thanks. I'm a complete NooB at that and would appreciate further explanation. What are "fatwood" shavings, and how did you use the fire steel?

Edited to add: OK, what do you use to scrape the fire steel?

The wss forum has great threads on this g. Check it out and learn a lot!
