Out-of-House Heat Treat Costs

How much would it cost to have 1-3 knives sent out for heat treating and who do you go to?

I want to become the world's worst stock-removal maker and I don't trust myself with a furnace, quenchant or using an oven to temper more than casserole (this fear keeps me from trying to become the world's worst forged-steel knifemaker).

Thanks in advance!

thombrogan,

It's been a while since I sent any knives out for heat treatment, so the prices may have changed. This should give you an idea though.

As of last October Paul Bos wanted 22.00 for a single knife (440C) which included cryo treatment. I'm not sure how much of a discount if any, you would get for multiple knives. You can call him at (619) 562-2370. I hope that's his work number. I accidentally called him at home (he was pretty nice to me anyway).

I have used Pacific Heat Treatment in the Bay area before. They did a good job for me on carbon steel (O-1). They are about the same price per blade (around 20.00 or so). It seems like they gave a discounted rate for multiple blades, but I can't remember for sure. Call Bill at (408)763-8500. He'll treat you right.

Good luck,
Rick

For me Paul Bos is the BEST insurance I can buy to insure my knives will work 100%... For me it works out to be about $5 per blade on average.. I think Paul does single blades for $12 each...

Trac
You must be sending them in 20 or more at a time,The blades are cheap to do it that way. There is no doubt that Paul is the best there
is but a small maker like myself can't afford to spend 24 dollars a blade.Paul is great to work with and if I ever get in the league were I can send 20 at a time paul is the man.
Payying 24 dollars a blade for HT then your time in makng the knife
the maker is making much profit of his work.just my thoughts

Paul Bos is definitely the best, but his service isn't really economical if your doing small batches or single knives. Texas knifemaker's supply ( www.texasknife.com ) does a good job and they're good people to deal with. They charged something like $9.00 a blade last time I sent stuff to them.

I called Paul about a month ago and he quoted me $21 a blade till I got to 20. I went with D' Holder and have loved the results. His price also includes cryo.

find someone who is sending a batch to Paul and get him to let you put yours in with his.............Paul is the best, hands down, and it is only $3.50 per blade when you send him 20 0r more.

Pauls price for under 20 blades stops at $70.............whether you send him 10 or 20 its the same.
