Out of my comfort zone?

I have a rule; I don't buy a knife unless they have a 4 inch plus handle. I have pretty large hands and like to be able to get all 4 fingers on the handle. I'm thinking of changing this rule though. Here's why:

Weight: Most knives with a longer handle also weigh a good bit more than more compact knives (duh!) and for some reason weight in my pockets has really grown to bother me. I also don't like bulky feeling knives.

Philosophy of Use: Nutnfancy has youtube reviews and while I think he's a little crazy at times one thing that I have seriously thought about in watching his reviews are POU. Do I really need to carry a hard use folder everyday? The answer is no. I work in an office and even when I'm at home I don't really need a LARGE hard use folder.

People friendly: Nothing like seeing your coworkers eyes get huge when you pull out a 4-5 inch blade to open a box. lol

Missing out: I feel like I'm missing out on a lot of nice EDC blades because of my rule. Really wanna try a mini-grip and especially the 707 Sequal (looks ideal for me).

I agree with you to an extent, and it's always good to take a step back sometimes, but...

Why, and this is rhetorical, do you carry a "hard use" folder? I do it because it serves as more than a pocket knife, and the time may come when i need it to do so, whether that be something mundane or very not mundane. The same thing goes for my concealed-carry permit. I didn't carry a gun because i need to, i do because there might come a time someday when DO need it, god forbid.

Obviously you have to be realistic and draw the line somewhere, but it's a preparedness thing for me. Larger folders just flat-out have a broader range of uses, whereas there are very few tasks a small knife could do that a larger one couldn't.

I went through something very similar in the last month. a full size ritter grip was my EDC for many, many years. On a whim, i picked up a 531. Well, today i took delivery of an 810 and the 531 is on ebay. I've gotten so used to the relative indestructability of the ritter that i had a very hard time carrying the 531 knowing what i couldn't do with it.

Good point. I guess in reality I'm wanting a balance between the two. I want a "hard use" knife in the sense of durability. I'm just trying to get a knife that doesn't weigh my pockets down too much. lol

I have a lot of knives, and the miniGrip has been my go-to EDC for at least a year. I work in a law office and wanted something fairly discrete-looking, so I "camouflaged" it with white scales and a silver split-arrow clip. But it's also a pretty darn capable, versatile, and durable knife for its size.
I was thinking about getting a 707, but I realized in-store that it's almost exactly the same size as my miniGrip, so I passed. There are plenty of 707 fans, though.

Should mention I have very small hands, and the mini is basically a four-finger knife for me. I've seen a couple folks with larger hands add a lanyard to the mini so they have more to grab onto; they seemed satisfied.

Take a look at the new ZT 0770CF. It gives you that "big knife" feel in a 3.0-ounce package. Highly recommended! :)

BMC,

I have been seeing you trying with some of the 950, and 810 so I will skip endorsing them.

Did you buy 940? Just like you, my POU for WDC (work day carry) are closed length of more than 4", no Auto & AA, narrow blade width, and blade length of up to 3.5". As you have mentioned blandishing blade in office is inappropriate at best.

I have good success with 940 and 531. Handle is long enough to have secure grip, but unfortunately Mini-G and 707 are a bit too short.

Happy "hunting"

MFL
