Out of the Box Sharpness Observations

Hello all:
I am a relatively new collector who owns about 20 knives so far equally split between production and custom knives. One general observation I have made so far is that my production knives, on average, are significantly sharper out of the box than my custom knives. This seems at least a bit counter-intuitive to me.

Anyone else notice something similar or am I making generalizations based on too small a statistical sampling? ;-)

Thanks,
Mitch

Spyderco knives are typically sharper out of the box than any other make, model, or makers knives. Some come close but consistantly the Spydies are the standard by which all others should be judged. Some of the most terrifyingly sharp knives I've ever handled have been ZDP189 Calypso Jrs and some of the S30V Natives among others. These things flat bite and will cut you before you even know you've been cut. You just notice after holding it that you suddenly see blood on stuff. Thats sharp.

Probably, try Landes, Dozier, R.J. Martin, Carter, Fikes, Tai Goo, etc. .

Bad or good edge, new in the box, the day will come you will have to work on if you are a user. A good edge is deserved.

dantzk.

Bob Dozier definitely rates very high on the custom list. I've never had a Dozier that didn't come scary scalpel sharp.

As far as production knives go, My Spydies have yielded the largest percentage of sharp blades. Not all of my Spydies came perfectly sharp, but very close to every single one.

I'm glad I have Bob Dozier on my list of people I must see at the Blade Show next month...

Every one of my several Spydies were extremely sharp out of the box.

Including a Spyderedge that arrived today.

The sharpest was a Ronin.

No real experience with customs but my experience with production knives has shown the following to be consistently sharp out of the box.
kershaw
crk&t
cold steel
spyderco
I'm sure there are others but these have done well in my experience. later, ahgar

a few years ago {1987} I ordered a Ruana hunting knife and it came surgery sharp. no i didn't have enough sense to keep it. dang i miss that knife.

I have no experience regarding custom knife sharpness since all my knifes are production models. That being said, I have noticed that the edges of production knives are much sharper now compared to just a few years ago.

Spyderco used to be the sharpest out of the box. My last few purchases have not been. A Cold Steel Kobun I once bought was ridiculously sharp. So was my little RJ Martin FB, and my current Yurco wharnie.
